The Walking Dead: The Rise of the Governor by Robert Kirkman and Jay Bonansinga
As a fan of the show The Walking Dead, but someone who has never read the comic books (though I want to) I was a little reluctant to read this book. Then I found out that it has nothing to do with either the series or the books, it just focuses solely on the life of Philip Blake and how he became The Governor of Woodbury. From what I understand, in the books, The Governor is one bad ass character, and knowing that he was going to be on this season I thought that this would be a good chance to get to know him. The book starts off 3 days after the plague breaks out, focusing on the lives of Philip and Brian Blake, Philip’s daughter Penny and two of his high school buddies. In the beginning they don’t even know how to kill the zombies, or even what they are. It’s the internal struggle they face day to day for survival and learning how to cope. The trials and tribulations they face just trying to find shelter, transportation, food and supplies. There is love, hate, backstabbing, rape, death, heartbreak and mental breakdown. I highly recommend this book. The writing is a bit basic, almost like ‘young adult’ style, but it keeps you interested. There is a huge twist at the end that even I didn’t see coming, and I usually catch stuff like that long before it even happens.
If you don’t get a chance to read the book that’s OK. Coming up we’ll be seeing the Governor in action on the new season of The Walking Dead. I’ll be interesting to see what they use from the book in the show, as I understand there are a lot of similarities between the comic, but there is also a lot of things left out. Also, it seems that the Governor in the book looks a lot like Danny Trejo, and they didn’t go that route on the show; though I’m sure he would have done it if he wasn’t shooting the Machete sequels. Anyway, we’ll all get to see what happens as October 14th is right around the corner…just like that zombie RIGHT THERE!!!
