Christmas has come a little early for us here at DFAT! The Disney and 21st Century Fox merger has been rumored for a long time now and after a lot of speculation and wishful hoping it has happened!

Truly there are only some aspects of this that we give a damn about, mainly the fact that MOST of Marvel’s properties are now under the Marvel Studios umbrella. This means your favorite mutants and most importantly the Fantastic Four will now be able to interact with all of the characters in the Marvel Studios movies. This takes my anticipation for Avengers 4 to a whole new level! Disney CEO Bob Iger also addressed the Deadpool issue as many fans were concerned that future sequels would not do justice to the character that Fox handled so well. Here’s what Iger had to say about it:

It [Deadpool] clearly has been and will be Marvel branded. But we think there might be an opportunity for a Marvel-R brand for something like Deadpool,” said Iger. “As long as we let the audiences know what’s coming, we think we can manage that fine.

I had no doubt that this would be resolved properly as The Punisher Netflix series had 10 times the violence of Deadpool yet it wasn’t as raunchy. Glad that Disney is making this decision. Look forward to some pretty amazing Marvel films to be announced as we head into Phase 4!!

Also on the docket is the fact that Fox owned the rights to Star Wars: A New Hope which now the House of Mouse has the FULL rights to Star Wars under their Lucasfilm banner. Also in the world of cinema, Disney also now owns the rights to Avatar and Planet of the Apes.

Lastly the merger puts Disney on an equal playing field when it comes to streaming services. We all knew that a Disney streaming service was on the way but now Disney owns a majority of the rights to HULU. Look for Netflix to lose a good chunk of its programming in the near future. Changes will also be coming for the Fox TV Network as it was also part of the deal. Fox has been known for their liberal programs while their news network sits somewhere in the far right. Too bad Disney couldn’t do anything about that!

Well Towelites it’s an exciting day to be a geek and we are all looking forward to what’s coming next!! Keep it tooned to DFAT for more news on the Disney acquisition as it comes!
