Everyone HAS to agree that the Hulk helped this summer’s mega-blockbuster ‘smash’ its way to success. Something that really has everyone in an uproar is the fact that we won’t be seeing a Hulk standalone movie this time around in Phase 2. But for those of us who have patience we may get something even better the next time around, within Phase 3, something to the tune of the uber-popular comic span that was Planet Hulk through World War Hulk. For those of you who are not familiar with it here’s a brief synopsis: The most powerful super-beings on the planet believed that the Hulk was such a threat that they tricked him and rocketed him off-world. His ship crash landed on an alien planet where he was taken prisoner and forced to be a gladiator. He fought, sorry SMASHED, his way to victory and eventually became the champion of the planet. It is one bad-ass storyline, but there’s also an animated feature to check out, so do it! Anywho, eventually Hulk becomes king and then decides to return to Earth and Smash the people who responsible for his banishment, ala World War Hulk. Really I don’t want to spoil much, but this cosmic adventure would fit in perfectly with the direction that Marvel Studios is headed, so you never know! Here’s what Marvel Studios’ producer Kevin Feige had to say on the topic:
“I don’t think there’s a lot that we couldn’t do someday, as the cinematic universe continues to grow and expand and get as big as the comic book universe. Planet Hulk’ is a cool story. ‘World War Hulk’ is a cool story. I think there’s pitfalls of continuity-overload, and mythology getting so dense that it almost collapses in on itself. It happens every few decades or so in the comics. Apart from that, I’d say everything is on the table. Do I think Hulk can carry a movie and be as entertaining as he was in ‘Avengers’? I do believe that. I do believe he absolutely could. We certainly are not even going to attempt that until ‘Avengers 2.’ So there’s a lot of time to think about it. Part of what’s fun about the way we played him in ‘Avengers’ is the ensemble quality of it. I think the pathos and humor, most importantly, that Mark and Joss brought to it showcased a different element of Hulk that’s there in the comics, and was always inherent in his character. But when he was so brooding in his other two films, he didn’t get to have that wry sense of humor that Mark did such an amazing job performing.”
