Why do video game franchises even try and make movies? It’s the age old question that’s plagued yet another film debut, this time Assassin’s Creed. The film had around a $125million budget and debuted at 5th place with $15million. Pretty horrible way to premier when those earnings are over a 4-day period. The movie was met with lukewarm reviews and unfortunately star Michael Fassbender has to add another stinker to his resume this year alongside X-Men Apocalypse.

The other films to debut this weekend were Sing, Passengers, and Why Him? Sing performed strong with $56.1million and continued to prove that animated films are king this year. Passengers didn’t fare quite as well, only taking in $23.1million and meeting tepid reviews. Why Him? earned $16.7million, which means it probably did just fine given the budget. You can see the rest of the Top Ten below.

1. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story $96.1 million

2. Sing $56.1 million

3. Passengers $23.1 million

4. Why Him? $16.7 million

5. Assassin’s Creed $15 million

6. Fences $11.4 million

7. Moana $10.4 million

8. La La Land $9.7 million

9. Office Christmas Party $7.3 million

10. Collateral Beauty $7.1 million

Rogue One surprised no one by remaining at #1 and earning another $96.1million. It’ll be curious if it can continue for a threepeat when it goes head-to-head with the fifth film in the Underworld series. My guess is that it will; but you’ll have to find out in the next edition of Weekend Roundup to see if I’m right!
