I did not see myself writing that The Secret Life of Pets would have the biggest ‘original’ animated box office debut of all-time; but alas, here I am doing so. The film brought in $103.2mil and surpassed Inside Out for best animated feature debut. I completely forgot this movie was even coming out, but this really has been the year for animated films. Zootopia, Finding Dory, and now this have all had very strong presences at the Box Office.

The debut of Mike & Dave Need Wedding Dates opened lukewarm with $16.6mil, with a budget of $33mil. On the other hand, The Legend of Tarzan took in another $20.6mil and stayed pretty solid in 2nd place. This has been one of the worst Summers in a long time and looking at the Top Ten below, you can see why.

1. The Secret Life of Pets $103.2 million

2. The Legend of Tarzan $20.6 million

3. Finding Dory $20.4 million

4. Mike & Dave Need Wedding Dates $16.6 million

5. The Purge: Election Year $11.7 million

6. Central Intelligence $8.1 million

7. Independence Day: Resurgence $7.7 million

8. The BFG $7.6 million

9. The Shallows $4.8 million

10. Sultan $2.2 million

Next week, we see the return of The Ghostbusters. The reviews came out last night and are expectantly split right down the middle. I personally will be saving my judgments until I see the film; but the trailers have yet to get me excited. I’m just hoping for a fun ride with the new cast and will try and not put it up against the previous two films. Yes, this is a hard thing to do, but I think we all go into a movie wanted to be entertained; so I think we should all just let the creative team behind the film do just that and form our opinions after. Will it be #1 next week at the Box Office? Find out on the next edition of Weekend Roundup!
