Y: The Last Man is one of the greatest graphic novels I’ve ever read. Heck, it’s one of the best pieces of fiction I’ve read, period.  Written by Brian K. Vaughn, it centers around Yorick and his pet monkey, as the last 2 surviving male mammals on Earth. As you can guess, the consequences of every male being dead takes these guys on quite the adventure. Think of ‘The Walking Dead’, except the zombies are replaced with blood-thirsty lesbians.

Y: The Last Man has been a project in developmental hell for about 10 years now, and today we find out that we might be a little closer to it getting made. It seems that New Line Cinema is very close to this becoming a reality. They have the writers from Jericho,  Matthew Federman and Stephen Scaia, hired to write the script and are now on the search for a director.

Honestly, as much as I LOVE this novel, I’m not sure how I feel about it being condensed into a 2 hour movie. If this was an option as a Showtime mini-series; I’d be all about it. This story is HUGE. I read it for a month straight. There’s so many characters and side-stories that branch off from Yorick’s journey, that there’s a LOT to explore. I suppose if you simply focus on the man and his monkey you could take a lot of stuff out, but still, it’d be quite the daunting task. If you want to see what an attempt at filming this movie would be like, take a look below.

Indie filmmaker Christian Cardona has called the film, The Last Man Rising. It’s about 20-minutes and it’s not too shabby, mostly just focuses on the initial reaction of the world as we find out all the males are wiped out.The short stars Travis Quentin Young as Yorick Brown, Kent King as Agent 355 and Rebecca Marshall as Hero Brown.

Once this is a done deal over at New Line, we’ll keep ya posted here at DFAT.
