Happy New Year Towelites!!!  With so many great things in 2013, it’s hard to narrow down what my favorites were, but I’m gonna go ahead and do that anyways…

To me, the best movie of the year was, without a doubt, This is the End.  I laughed through the entire movie!  The cast was awesome, each playing exaggerated versions of themselves.  Jonah Hill as a total diva, James Franco as the renaissance man he’s depicted to be in real life (though I did hear that he actually painted all of the art work in his house himself), Seth Rogen was basically who you think he is, Danny McBride as the jerk everybody loves to hate, Emma Watson dropping F bombs and Michael Cera as a drugged out douche bag that smacks Rihanna!   There’s so many more celebrities and craziness in this movie it would take forever to write about it.  Basically, it’s the Rapture, some people have made it into Heaven while the rest of the world is left to fight through Hell on Earth to redeem themselves, or die in the fiery pits of Hell.  I honestly haven’t seen a movie this funny in a long, long time and I highly recommend that you run out and rent it, buy it, OnDemand it, whatever your choice, but if you haven’t seen it you are totally missing out!  And watch out for the unexpected cameo at the end.  I don’t know why, but I thought it was one of the funniest things in the movie.
Now, onto the best book of the year.  Not surprisingly I pick The Ocean at the End of the Lane by Neil Gaiman.  This book is filled with mystery and wonder, as is to be expected.  It’s about a boy who finds the body of his family’s border collie in their car down at the end of the lane.  From there he meets a mysterious family of remarkable women.  He befriends the girl, Lettie Hempstock, and she has to protect him from the darkness that is trying to take over.  This book is 178 pages of pure awesomness.  I read it in one sitting and honestly wanted to start over from the beginning the minute I was finished.  There is nothing like a book that can just suck you in and make you a part of its world.  Neil Gaiman has done that for me with every book he’s written, and he did not disappoint with this one!  I would even go so far as to say this might be my favorite next to Neverwhere.
There you have it guys, my picks for 2013.  I can’t wait to see what’s in store for next year!  Have a safe and Happy New Year!
