I don’t know why I’ve waited so long to take a look at this figure. It’s not like I left it in the box, I open all of Marvel Select figures, this one I really couldn’t wait to get my hands on. I think that Venom is my favorite figure to date from Diamond/Marvel Select, it may be my favorite Venom action figure ever. The best part of it, you get four hideous representations of Venom in one box, not a bad investment! With alternating heads and hands, and a scary multi-headed mutation, there are lots of different ways to display Eddie Brock here. To this day one of my favorite Marvel characters, you see I never was a big Spidey fan, I always liked his villains better, especially the symbiote.

Spider-Man first encountered the Venom Symbiote in Secret Wars #8, in which he unwittingly merged with it. After Spider-Man rejected it, the Symbiote merged with Eddie Brock, its most well-known host, in The Amazing Spider-Man #300 (May 1988). Originally, the Symbiote was portrayed as a mute and lonely creature craving the company of a host. More recently, it has been shown as increasingly abusive of its hosts, and having the power of speech. The Venom Symbiote has no known name, as “Venom” is essentially the moniker Eddie Brock adopted due to his history with Spider-Man on Earth. According to S.H.I.E.L.D., it is considered one of the greatest threats to humanity, alongside Magneto, Doctor Doom, and Red Skull.[/box_light]

Venom The Amazing Spider-Man 300

Villain…Monster….

[box_light]Venom, or the Venom Symbiote, is a fictional extraterrestrial life form appearing in books published by Marvel Comics, usually those featuring Spider-Man. The creature is a Symbiote, a sentient alien, with a gooey, almost liquid-like form that requires a host, usually human, to bond with for its survival, as with real world symbiotes, and to whom it endows enhanced powers. When the Venom Symbiote bonds with a human, that new dual-life form refers to itself as Venom. The Symbiote’s first known host was Spider-Man, who eventually separated himself from the creature when he discovered its true nature. The Symbiote went on to merge with other hosts, most notably Eddie Brock, its second and most infamous host, with whom it first became Venom and one of Spider-Man’s archenemies.[/box_light]

Lethal Protector, hero?

[box_light]Before the story begins, Venom makes an agreement with Spider-Man that they will leave each other alone, on the condition that Venom commits no crimes. Venom then moves from New York City to San Francisco, and takes up with a group of Californian mole people. Shortly thereafter the father of one of Venom’s victims seeks him out with a group of super-powered mercenaries to take revenge. Spider-Man, seeing misleading coverage of Venom on television, heads to San Francisco to confront him and instead winds up fighting alongside Venom against five new offspring of the Venom Symbiote: Scream, Phage, Riot, Lasher, and Agony.[/box_light]

The Madness…

[box_light]A three-part series published between November 1993 and January 1994, the series introduces attorney Beck as a love interest for Brock. When Beck pursues a lawsuit against Scarmore Industries for employees poisoned by a sentient liquid-mercury virus, Venom is injured trying to protect her from the Juggernaut’s kidnap attempt. The symbiote is submerged and infected with the sentient virus (which heals Brock), bonding with the pair and introducing a third mind into their relationship. The virus drives Brock insane (causing him to murder a cleaning lady), and he is physically transported to the realm of insanity to confront its avatars: Paranoia, Dusk and the Necromancer. The symbiote overcomes the virus; Brock regains his senses, and Venom is returned to earth. Beck later insists on only being Brock’s friend, because his romantic feelings for her make him more violent.[/box_light]

Now listen I know that crossing toy companies may be a little taboo, but I couldn’t help putting this Spidey into the pic, plus he is a very light figure which allowed me to balance the pair. I really love the green and black costume as well, it from a story arc called “Big Time” check out ComicVine’s extensive library of knowledge if you want some more insight on the event. I really need to get my hands on a red and blue Spidey, oh and a Carnage would be nice.
