Only awake through sheer defiance, Cary sat in her car seat, face washed over with the orange glow of the streetlamps that stood like passive attendants watching over the freeway. The world felt topsy-turvey, like the combined millions of years of human evolution never accounted for long nights in a rickety box on wheels staring at the white and yellow lines flashing by at seventy miles per hour. Cary’s father was looking worse for wear, ten hours of driving really throwing his mind for a spin. She spotted the tall light advertising a roadside diner, she nudged him to get his attention.

Guardians of the Galaxy #1 (Marvel)

Donny Cates (W) Geoff Shaw (A)

This team has successfully done some of the best comics in the last five years. I am pumped to see them breath life into this title again. I stopped reading GotG around the third act of Bendis’s run, and I think this may get a lot of people back in a big way.

Justice League #16 (DC)

Scott Snyder/ James Tynion IV (W) Jim Cheung (A)

Man, I have a hard time getting excited for this book sometimes. It’s weird because all the talent on this title excites me, I feel cheated somehow. Not to say it’s bad per say, but I may have been lead by loft expectations.

Pearl #6 (DC)

Brian Michael Bendis (W) Michael Gaydos (A)

This is a great book, if not just a tad disjointed at times. I think the character work that Bendis does really moves the story in this book. It’s like his spiritual successor to Jessica Jones, in more than just the creative team.

Aquaman #44 (DC)

Kelly Sue DeConnick (W) Robson Rocha/Daniel Henriques (A)

The first issue in this new arc is amazing. I am more and more excited to see what DC does with the new talent they are pulling over to their team.

Man Without Fear #4 (of 5) (Marvel)

Jed McKay (W) Danilo Beyruth (A)

This book is an excellent way of utilizing something as final as the ending of a team’s series to build a new story and playground to explore. While this is just a limited series, it gets to explore stuff that the fast paced territory of an ongoing might not be able to. Interesting concepts at work here.

Avengers #13 (Marvel)

Jason Aaron (W) Andrea Sorrentino (A)

I think it’s safe that ever since they debuted, people have been curious as the the nature of Avengers 1,000,000 BC. Sorrentino joins the team to flesh out the Iron Fist of ancient Earth.

Cover #5 (DC)

Brian Michael Bendis (W) David Mack (A)

A book about comic creators going undercover for the government. Someone call Tom King, he’s owed royalties.

Lucifer #4 (Vertigo)

Dan Watters (W) Sebastian Fiumara/Max Fiumara (A)

Poetic is the word I might use to describe this book, but I don’t use words to describe comics, just strawberry flavored ray-beams that I flash in a sequence that imitates written word.

Outcast #38 (Image)

Robert Kirkman (W) Paul Azaceta (A)

The last issue hurt me. Yay. More issues.

Shazam #2 (DC)

Geoff Johns (W) Dale Eaglesham (A)

I really loved the first issue, but I can’t help that it would work better for me if I had read Johns’ last run on the series. Either way, read this one.

The Wild Storm #19 (WildStorm)

Warren Ellis (W) Jon Davis-Hunt (A)

Shit is coming together in a big way. I gotta say, I’m interested in seeing where Ellis goes with this imprint once the twenty four issue run is over.

Die! Die! Die! #7 (Image)

Robert Kirkman/Scott Gimple (W) Chris Burnham (A)

This may actually come out this week! That’s exciting!

Sideways #12 (DC)

Dan Didio (W) Kenneth Rocafort (A)

The penultimate issue of the series that introduced the most interesting character from the New Age of Heroes. Kinda disappointed it’s over, but a couple writers have hinted at him joining the rosters of their books so maybe there is hope yet.

Exorsisters #4 (Image)

Ian Boothby (W) Gisele Lagace (A)

This book is fucking great. A pessimistic, deadpan look at the macabre. Matched with the beautiful art that’s something out of a Gothic Archie fantasy, makes this a book unlike anything on the shelves.

Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man #2 (Marvel)

Tom Taylor (W) Juann Cabal (A)

The first issue of this book was all of the wholesome goodness I expected from this title. Congrats, guys. You did it.

Batman #63 (DC)

Tom King (W) Mikel Janin (A)

Any time Batman gets thrust into the magic world, I can’t help but enjoy it. I’m sure this issue will be another hit. The last issue was strange and abstract and kinda pushed the concepts of the book to a different level. I think that’s what this arc is all about.

The Immortal Hulk #12 (Marvel)

Al Ewing (W) Joe Bennett (A)

Who doesn’t want to see Hulk punch the devil? Come on? Don’t lie to me.

Regression #15 (Image)

Cullen Bunn (W) Danny Luckert (A)

I am incredibly sad that this book is ending. It was a horrible ride and I cry myself to sleep almost every night. Thank you.

They sat in the booth, Cary’s eyes tracing the path of their waitress. She made laps around the bar, rushing her work along as if trying to prove something to her sleep addled mind. It was three in the morning and no one should be as busy as the woman who was kindly refilling her father’s coffee cup. The waitress’s name was Susan, a delightfully dated name for a woman who couldn’t have been older than twenty-five. Cary decided she liked her, and even felt a tinge of awkwardness when Susan glanced casually at the pet carrier that was holding their thirteen year old cat, Wonky. Susan’s eyes floated on the cat in a manner that suggested she was contemplating telling them that cat’s weren’t allowed. She thought better of it apparently, because she looked back up at Cary and took her plate to the back, only cautioning one final glace as she pushed through the bat-wing doors into the kitchen.
