The brook ran calmly through a fading forest. The mist set low in the trees and almost blotted out the sun. It collected in small rivulets on the browned leaves, rolling off and creating a tame rain in the quiet place. It had been years since someone had walked through the wood and tainted it with their specific brand of entropy. This day marked the end of that period.

Marvel Zombie #1 (Marvel)

W. Maxwell Prince (W) Stefano Raffaele (A)

I thought this was a series for some reasons, turns out it isn’t and that’s fine. It looks like they’re kinda rebooting/reimagining the Marvel Zombie universe. Not sure what that means but I’m a big fan of what Prince has been doing on Ice Cream Man, so I’m all in.

Lucifer #1 (DC)

Dan Watters (W) Max Fiumara (A)

Can someone explain why Alan Moore is on the cover of this issue? I’m confused. Someone help me.

Astonishing X-Men #16 (Marvel)

Matthew Rosenberg (W) Greg Land (A)

If you can’t beat them, join them. I guess is the motto of this book as the heroes are doing just that and I’m pretty sure that means they’re supporting terrorists or something. Man, morality is complex, guys.

Curse Words #17 (Image)

Charles Soule (W) Ryan Browne (A)

I feel like the heart of this book has been pulled out. I’m not entirely sure why I feel that way. The last couple arcs have felt lackluster. I may be off this book pretty soon.

Rumble #8 (Image)

John Arcudi (W) David Rubin (A)

This book got extra weird really fucking fast. Suddenly, we’re on an island that may or may not be heaven or Valhalla or something and we’re sacrificing people on top of a mountain. Sounds like a typical Saturday night. Amirite?

Cover #2 (of 6) (DC)

Brian Michael Bendis (W) David Mack (A)

The first issue of this book was really fun and interesting and totally a comic book circle jerk like I was anticipating. That’s fine. I write this article, I understand comic circle jerks.

Cemetery Beach #2 (of 7) (Image)

Warren Ellis (W) Jason Howard (A)

This book wasn’t what I was expecting. It was a crazy sci-fi romp. Not typical Ellis fare, but I love the change in pace. It’s a beautifully rendered book and I can’t wait for the next issue.

New Challengers #6 (of 6) (DC)

Scott Snyder (W) Aaron Gillespie

I really enjoyed this series and I hope that the New Challengers are incorporated in the universe going forward, unless they die or something. Man, it would really suck if they all just died now. That’s totally what’s going to happen now isn’t it? Fuck.

Patience! Conviction! Revenge! #2 (Aftershock)

Patrick Kindlon (W) Marco Ferrari (A)

Revenge stories are like apple pie. They go really good with ice cream and the smell of a shady diner. Don’t look into that sentence, it means nothing. Anyway, this is a nice ole’ revenge story with robots and lotsa sand and funny words and pretty pictures.

Pearl #3 (of 6) (DC)

Brian Michael Bendis (W) Michael Gaydos (A)

I love this story. It’s real pretty and it’s about tattoos and stuff. Look give me a break. You try explaining the complexities of like twenty comics every week. I run out of words. They’re good, they’re great, I love them, you should too.

Sideways #9 (DC)

Dan DiDio (W) Max Raynor (A)

I think they’re really getting to the meat of this character. The idea of him teleporting everywhere is fun and all, but him being an interdimensional hoppy-boy makes this book a lot more interesting. This is probably my favorite series out of all of the New Age of Hero series.

Thor #6 (Marvel)

Jason Aaron (W) Christian Ward (A)

Come on. This book is batshit crazy right now. The team is perfect for batshit crazy. Both of these guys are really pouring all of themselves into this arc and it’s really paying off.

Justice League #10 (DC)

Scott Snyder (W) Francis Manapul (A)

Man, I really don’t want to read Drowned Earth. I mean this book has been really good but I don’t want to pick up all the extra comics in order to read it. So, I won’t. So this is the precursor to a crossover I won’t read. Fun.

Daredevil #609 (Marvel)

Charles Soule (W) Phil Noto (A)

Give me more Noto. Put him on every book. His art is so fucking amazing. I want him to do a sixties style Fantastic Four book. Really, a sixties style comic in general. Look up his sixties style covers. He is great.

Justice League Dark #4 (DC)

James Tynion IV (W) Raul Fernandez (A)

FUUUUUUUUUUCK this book is so god damned interesting. I love how creepy it has been, I love the cast, I love the art, I love the mission statement. All that fun stuff. This book is everything I wanted and more.

Skyward #7 (Image)

Joe Henderson (W) Lee Garbett (A)

Big old bugs. Can I say that the build up to big old bugs was really solid and well calculated. They threw in a couple hints throughout the last couple issues. Anyway, this is being developed into a movie, so that’s cool.

Runaways #14 (Marvel)

Rainbow Rowell (W) David Lafuente (A)

This book is like a dose of my teenage years. It captures the idea we have about how intense our teenage years without all that messy awkwardness that scars you for years. You know, let some fictional characters deal with that.

Black Hammer: Age of Doom #6 (Dark Horse)

Jeff Lemire (W) Rich Tommaso (A)

I am really interested in seeing how Tommaso handles the world of Black Hammer. His art isn’t for everyone but fuck if it isn’t for me. I am extremely excited for his issues. Oh, also, the story is fucking great and stuff.

Venom Annual #1 (Marvel)

Donny Cates/David Michelinie/Jeff Loveness/James Stokoe (W) Kev Walker/Ron Lim/Tigh Walker/James Stokoe (A)

Look at the team on Venom’s first annual. If you aren’t excited, then don’t talk to me.

Old Man Logan #49 (Marvel)

Ed Brisson (W) Ibraim Roberson (A)

THE END IS NIGH. IT’S TIME TO DIE MR. SLASHY-GUY.

Batman #57 (DC)

Tom King (W) Tony S. Daniel (A)

A lot of people are upset about what’s been going on in this book. I feel like that’s gonna be the running theme with this series. Fuck all of them. I still love it.

The New World #4 (of 5) (Image)

Ales Kot (W) Tradd Moore (A)

Man, I’m upset that this is only five issues. I absolutely love this team up. I really hope that they get back together sometime in the future.

East of West #39 (Image)

Jonathan Hickman (W) Nick Dragotta (A)

The chosen book is back. Just so it can end in like four issues. Great. Thanks Hickman. I don’t blame you Dragotta, you did all the work.

Gideon Falls #7 (Image)

Jeff Lemire (W) Andrea Sorrentino (A)

This is the kind of book that makes me question why I ever thought I could be a writer. Just stop having dreams. Lemire did it better.

Tormond didn’t know how he got to the forest. He only knew that he was deep in the woods by his home. The only reason he had even that small piece of knowledge was a not that had been pinned to his jacket. When Tormond was a child, he had a teacher that would pin notes to his jacket in much the same way, so he could take them home to his parent. Feverishly, he stumbled through the leaves that littered the ground, kicking them up in a confetti, wishing he was heading home to his parents.
