The revolver in his hand was brown with rust. He trembled as the weight of it pulled him to the ground. His legs, locked at the knees, were the only things left fighting the pull. His stance was wide and his chest hung over his knees, as his whole body threatened to crumple. Deep gasping breaths shook his body. He had made it this far on the shoulders of nothing but luck. Mistakes compounded to create a victor. How long had he been fighting? Months? Years? The blue domed horizon of the hologram battle field wavered and retracted. He knew he only had seconds before the next contestant appeared. Big letters flashed in the sky. “THE FINAL BATTLE: OLD TRUSTY VS THE SAVAGE RENDER. He was pretty sure he was Old Trusty.

Avengers #685 (Marvel)

Al Ewing/Mark Waid/Jim Zub (W) Paco Medina (A)

I feel like the pieces are finally coming together in this series. Some solid reveals last week, all the pieces are starting to fall together.

Iron Fist #78 (Marvel)

Ed Brisson (W) Damian Couceiro (A)

Tie in to a book I’m already reading, which works out for me, but if I weren’t reading Damnation I’d be upset. I’m so hard to please.

Evolution #5 (Image)

James Asmus/ Joshua Williamson/Christopher Sebela/Joseph Keatinge (W) Joe Infurnari (A)

Penultimate issue of the arc? I add the question mark because I’m not sure if the series is ending already. I really don’t think it is, hopefully it’s just a break after issue six. This series has too many loose ends to leave me hanging like this.

Ms. Marvel #28 (Marvel)

G. Willow Wilson (W) Nico Leon (A)

Haven’t really been feeling this last arc. I get the significance of the story, but it all feels a little less interesting when the titular character is AWOL.

The Mighty Thor #705 (Marvel)

Jason Aaron (W) Russell Dauterman (A)

When you have near infinite power at your finger tips, and a tragedy happens, is it your fault if you do nothing to stop it. That’s the feel, that’s the deal. Heavy stuff.

Babyteeth #9 (Aftershock)

Donny Cates (W) Garry Brown (A)

If you could see me right now, you’d see me thrusting my hands in a devil horn gesture towards the heavens while blood drips out of my eyes and I scream what seems like a chant in reverse. Satan. Metal.

Runaway #7 (Marvel)

Rainbow Rowell (W) Kris Anka (A)

New arc, same heart. Pretty sure I’ve used that one a few times by now. Fuck it.

Doctor Strange: Damnation #3 (Marvel)

Nick Spencer/Donny Cates (W) Szymon Kudranski (A)

This is a solid event. It’s not “shake the grounds of the Marvel Universe” big, but it’s definitely got some pretty big stakes so far.

Tales of Suspense #103 (of 104) (Marvel)

Matthew Rosenberg (W) Travel Foreman (A)

Rosenberg and Foreman are a team I really hope I get to see more of. This mini series is fantastic, I can’t wait for the next issue.

The Further Adventures of Nick Wilson #3 (Image)

Marc Andreyko/Eddie Gorodetsky (W) Steve Sadowski (A)

This is another one of those series that I can really see getting picked up to be a show. It has a lot of humanity coursing through its pages. It’s a really simple story told in a big way. I dig that.

Outcast #34 (Image)

Robert Kirkman (W) Paul Azaceta (A)

Falling into some familiar territory recently. Kirkman writing about a community of strangers trying to survive overwhelming odds and a supernatural force. Why does that sound familiar?

Rumble #4 (Image)

John Arcudi (W) David Rubin (A)

“Oh shit!” was exactly how I ended the last issue.

Moonshine #8 (Image)

Brain Azzarello (W) Eduardo Risso (A)

Fucking werewolf hobos. They always gitcha.

Samurai Jack: Quantum Jack #5 (IDW)

Fabian Rangel Jr. (W) Warwick J. Cadwell (A)

The finale I’ve been waiting for is finally here after months of delays. I’m not even mad, just happy it’s coming out.

Regression #8 (Image)

Cullen Bunn (W) Danny Luckert (A)

Fuck this story is terrifying. I love it, it’s gross and spooky. Both adjectives often used to describe me.

Thanos #17 (Marvel)

Donny Cates (W) Geoff Shaw (A)

This series is going to be ending soon and that should make you sad. It makes me sad. Why aren’t you sharing my emotions? Is something wrong with you?

Ice Cream Man #3 (Image)

W. Maxwell Prince (W) Martin Morazzo (A)

Holy hell this series is just killing it. I absolutely love it. I love anthologies, I love ice cream, I love ominous, potentially supernatural forces that coerce people into doing horrible things. Love all around.

Deathbed #2 (Vertigo Comics)

Joshua Williamson (W) Riley Rossmo (A)

I didn’t have the first issue of this book on my list when it came out. It completely snuck up on me, and holy shit, I’m glad I caught it when I did. That first issue was fucking batshit crazy and I fell in love instantly. Check this one out.

Batman #43 (DC)

Tom King (W) Mikel Janin (A)

BATTLE ROYALE. LADY AND MAN WHO DRESS LIKE ANIMALS FOR STRANGE REASON AGAINST WOMAN WHO USES PLANTS TO KILL PEOPLE FOR BEING A PEOPLE LIKE SHE IS A PEOPLE.

Descender #28 (Image)

Jeff Lemire (W) Dustin Nguyen (A)

EVERYTHING GETS REVEALED?!?!?! NOT CLICKBAIT!!!!

Kill or be Killed #17 (Image)

Ed Brubaker (W) Sean Phillips (A)

That fucking reveal in the last issue is what this fucking comic book is about. Holy shit, I love this series. If you aren’t reading it, you are a foolish fool.

The battlefield grew from nothing, expanding and expanding to reveal a small town with boarded up building and strong winds. Then the opponent appeared. A monster. A creature standing head and shoulders above Old Trusty. Pale skin and black eyes, two massive arms supplemented with a detachable set of arms that wrapped around his waist and seemed to move on their own. The creature looked well rested. That hardly seemed fair. He leaped through the air, seeming to float rather than drop. Old Trusty took this chance to load two corroded cartridges into the chamber. The second one seemed to stick to the rust in the cylinder. The Savage Render landed in front of him, he quickly fired the gun which to his own dismay, yet strangely not to his surprise, did not actually fire. A wet click left him standing naked. The creature grabbed it from him mockingly. Almost immediately the whole gun exploded, ruining the creatures mechanical arms. Sparks flew from the pack and it choked on the air quickly filling its bloody lungs. Then there was nothing as the hologram disappeared.

“YOU’VE WON!”

“Yeah.”
