David Cronenberg is going around getting interviewed for his newest movie, Cosmopolis, starring Robert Pattinson, and recently sat down to chat with Next Movie. During the interview he had a lot to say about superhero movies, and in particular, Christopher Nolan’s take on Batman.
Cronenberg went on to say, “A superhero movie, by definition, you know, it’s comic book. It’s for kids. It’s adolescent in its core. That has always been its appeal, and I think people who are saying, you know, ‘Dark Knight Rises’ is, you know, supreme cinema art, I don’t think they know what the f**k they’re talking about.”
Honestly, I think that’s just great. An honest person in Hollywood who isn’t afraid to tell people how it is. I personally believe those movies are great to look at, but they are NOT Batman movies. Batman at his core is a DETECTIVE; not a dude who gets crippled for 8 years and gives up being a hero because his ex-girlfriend died in a fire he couldn’t even detect and prevent. Remeber when your parents were viciously murdered in front of you and you decided to don a cape and cowl to bring bad guys to justice? Oh, no, you forgot cause some crazy smiling dude offed your ex. Then you started walking with a limp and was taken down by a girl who doesn’t even have formal ninja training. Yeah, that makes total sense.
Anywho, Cronenberg also talked more about Nolan’s films in general and more on Batman.
Christopher Nolan’s best movie is “Memento,” and that is an interesting movie. I don’t think his Batman movies are half as interesting though they’re 20 million times the expense. What he is doing is some very interesting technical stuff, which, you know, he’s shooting IMAX and in 3-D. That’s really tricky and difficult to do. I read about it in “American Cinematography Magazine,” and technically, that’s all very interesting. The movie, to me, they’re mostly boring.
