It’s been awhile since I picked up a LEGO Super Heroes set, Marvel or DC Comics! Today we are going to take a look at a set from the Marvel line based on the hit cartoon Avengers Assemble. Recently a bunch of new Marvel sets have hit shelves and I will be reviewing two of them this month. Today, I’ll be taking a look at Captain America vs. Hydra. At the price point of $19.99 this is a decent size set, coming in at 172 pieces. By no means a difficult build, I think it took me about 40 minutes, and that’s with taking pictures during the assembly.
I wasn’t planning on picking up any of the new sets besides the larger M.O.D.O.K. AIM set (review coming later this month), but I couldn’t pass it up, especially with Red Skull and a HYDRA soldier being exclusive minifigs. So here we are, and let me say that I am glad that I did buy it. The tank is pretty neat, especially the way that the wheels are constructed. As you can see in the pic above, they move around pretty well and adjust to any terrain that you drive it across.
The figures here are all new except Cap, but this is a chance to pick him up if you missed the set from the original Avengers release. I’st pretty rare now and expensive to buy outright online, you are probably looking at paying twice what it originally went for at retail. Cap’s motorcycle is different this time around, which I actually like in terms of not having too many of the same LEGO pieces/parts. Red Skull and HYDRA soldier are new, as I stated before, but I really like the detail that went into both of these minifigs. Red Skull even has the HYDRA symbol painted on his belt, which I find to be a nice touch. The soldier himself has a perfect paint scheme with the classic green and yellow, and a “H” painted on the back of his mask. I am sure that these will go for good money when it comes to collectors wanting to army build.
This is a great set for all ages, easy and quick to construct and provides plenty of play value. Both Red Skull and the HYDRA soldier can fit into the tank, one drives and the other mans the missiles. Interestingly enough we are getting sets based on the cartoon and not the upcoming Captain America: The Winter Soldier movie, which is fine because the other Marvel set I’m picking up gives us some really unique characters. Though I really do want a Winter Solider minifig! The tank in this set is a little smaller than expected but I guess at this price point these days you can’t ask for too much, or can you? LEGO Captain America vs. HYDRA gets 4.5 outta 5 stars.
LEGO has been doing a great job with their Super Heroes line and I am really looking forward to the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy sets!!
