Then Came You 1Having an emotional reaction to a movie shows its quality. It doesn’t matter what kind of movie as long as you have a reaction. Comedy is the easiest to measure since laughing is immediate and normally audible. I laugh at movies all the time but I rarely cry. The last movie I remember making me cry was Radio Flyer. I remember watching it in the theater and I was around 9 years old. Then Came You made me cry in the best way possible for a movie handling this subject matter.

[No Spoilers] Maisie Williams plays Skye, a girl dying of cancer, who meets Calvin (Asa Butterfield) at a cancer support meeting. She enlists him to help her carry out her bucket list. Things unfold a bit differently than expected in some ways. Williams is amazing in this film and her range showcased here is impressive. In Game of Thrones, we were able to watch her go from older child to young adult as one character. I hope this is the start of a long career for her. Butterfield was unsurprisingly good and every scene Williams and Butterfield shared was heartfelt and natural.

The supporting cast did a great job of breaking typecasting. David Koechner (Anchorman, American Dad, The Office) gave a solid performance as Calvin’s dad while Tyler Hoechlin (Supergirl, Teen Wolf, Fifty Shades Freed) played his brother with a few very well done dramatic scenes. I haven’t seen Nina Dobrev (The Vampire Diaries) in anything previously but if her portrayl here is any indication, I hope I see her in the future.

Neely Eisenstein is the casting director and I feel a large amount of the credit should go here. Hiring who they did for the roles they played here worked out perfectly and if it wasn’t for the perfect casting we may have had a lesser film.

As always I am Tim McDonald, your movie watching stunt double. I am looking for hidden gems or movies that you feel don’t get enough recognition. I would like some help finding some good movies that may have slipped under the collective radar. Hit me up with ideas for movies you want me to review and come up with bad jokes about.
