In what could possibly be the weirdest news I’ve heard today, it looks as though John Travolta may be playing a role in the upcoming remake of The Toxic Avenger.  Hot-Tub Time Machine director, Steve Pink, is looking to turn the classic shlock-fest into an  “action-comedy remake in the vein of THE MASK… he’s an environmental superhero…doesn’t want it to be campy…” and Travolta may have a part as the villain of the movie, or maybe even Toxie himself; although that’s less than likely.

I’m not really even sure what to think of all this Toxic Avengers news honestly. The Toxic Avengers is a movie I remember seeing when I was a small child, way younger than I should have been seeing a movie like that, and I loved it all the same. It was gross, crude, and with an amazing sense of humor that didn’t take itself too seriously. How can you really take yourself seriously when in the movie, Melvin, and 90lb weakling get’s bullied into a vat of toxic waste, turning him into a hulking hero for the environment. Heck, they use a watermelon in a head crushing scene! It’s just amazing! Throughout the years, I’ve been a fan of Troma and Lloyd Kaufman‘s work, but Toxie will always hold the most special place in my heart.

Somehow, I doubt this new, more “serious” take on the character will involve watermelons OR head-crushing, but we shall keep you posted my fellow Towelites!
