Time for everyone to start hyping the hell out of Man of Steel, that’s if you want to see a Justice League movie! Anywho, I will go and see this movie regardless, but Mark Millar wants you to know where he stands on Henry Cavill‘s portrayal of Superman:

It’s hard to put a finger on it, but sometimes it just feels right. Curt Swan and Alex Ross have captured Superman better than any other artist. Cary Bates, Elliot Maggin, Mark Waid, Gerry Conway and Alan Moore have nailed it more than any other writer. There have been some brilliant creators on Superman over the years telling wonderful stories, but my radar is attuned and I can spot an impersonation. Jose Luis Garcia Lopez draws a guy I believe is Superman just like Alex Ross can. But others can’t regardless of how brilliant they may be. It’s just an X-factor or an understanding of the character. Anyway, it’s the same with casting. So many people been pored over all the years and so many of them close, but wrong. Brandon Routh is actually brilliant and you only have to see Scott Pilgrim to see how impeccable his timing is. But he looked more like Christopher Reeve than Superman. Dean Cain, Tom Welling and all the others were completely wrong for the part and the big names mooted were never right either. But I completely buy Cavill in this role. That instinctive gut feeling that I’m looking at a pic of Superman. I don’t even mind the costume. Losing the trunks was pointless, throws the balance of the design off and looks truly, truly HORRIBLE in the comics. But the muted colours work really well, those dark blues and reds really making the pics look very rich and regal. I love how this is looking. Cavill was a great choice, but then Snyder has a great eye. Cracking team behind this so I have high hopes.

Empire Magazine recently had a feature on Man of Steel and here are some new pictures from the spread. They feature a new look at the Man of Steel himself, Russell Crowe as Jor-El and Michael Shannon as General Zod:

DC and Warner Bros have been trending towards to more realistic superhero movies and TV shows as of late. It seem to work with The Dark Knight Trilogy (if you believe that), Arrow is doing well on TV and now both Henry Cavill and writer David S. Goyer have commented on the “feeling” and realism of Man of Steel.

Cavill (Empire interview):

“It’s not a dark movie by any means. Past representations of the character have been quite light… This is a more realistic view of the character, while still maintaining the very unrealistic, or potentially unrealistic features of an alien with superpowers.”

Goyer on the tone of the film (Empire interview):

“We’re approaching Superman as if it weren’t a comic book movie, as if it were real. I adore the Donner films. Absolutely adore them.  It just struck me that there was an idealist quality to them that may or may not work with today’s audience.  It just struck me that if Superman really existed in the world, first of all this story would be a story about first contact. He’s an alien.  You can easily imagine a scenario in which we’d be doing a film like E.T., as opposed to him running around in tights.  If the world found out he existed, it would be the biggest thing that ever happened in human history.  It falls into that idea of trying to humanize the inhuman.  He’s made out of steel, he’s not made out of flesh, metaphorically speaking.  We are portraying him as a man, yet he’s not a man. It is obviously a much longer process with a character like Superman.  It is much easier to do a realistic take on Batman.  You know nothing can hurt Superman, presumably other than Kryptonite.  The challenge was simply: can we figure out a way to make those elements work, quote unquote, in the real world?  It’s very much a story of a man with two fathers. There is more action in Man of Steel than any of the Dark Knight Films”

That’s good news to everyone who was worried about the level of action in the film, but still doesn’t promise anything. Let’s hope for the best!

Finally we have a new look at Amy Adams as the intrepid Lois Lane, making her a red-head is one of my favorite changes that have come about this time around, gotta love red-heads!
