It’s a great weekend to be a Kaiju, as Godzilla: King of the Monsters roars to the #1 spot at the Box Office this weekend. The film was ale to earn $49 million and solidified it as the winner. Let this be known though, this is a downward spiral for the Legendary ‘Monsterverse’ that they’re working towards. The first Godzilla in 2014 debuted at $93 million and even Kong: Skull Island was able to nab $61 million on opening weekend. Maybe the recipe lies in the Adam Wingard pairing of Godzilla vs Kong that’s due out in a couple of years. We shall see.

Last week’s winner, Aladdin, was able to take in another $42 million and brings it’s total to over $185 million and it landed in 2nd place. The debuts of Rocketman and Ma were 3rd and 4th on the Top Ten with $25 million and $18.2 million, respectively. The rest of the Top Ten movies are below.

1. Godzilla: King of the Monsters     $49,025,000

2. Aladdin $42,335,000

3. Rocketman $25,000,000

4. Ma $18,260,000

5. John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum$11,100,000

6. Avengers: Endgame $7,813,000

7. Pokemon Detective Pikachu   $6,665,000

8. Booksmart       $3,328,648

9. Brightburn $2,315,000

10. The Hustle         $1,300,000

Next weekend, we have the premiere of X-Men: Dark Phoenix, a movie that just begs to be ignored. The film continues to look super boring in the trailers and I don’t even think it’s been reviewed yet; which is never a great sign with less than a week to go. Just how many tens of thousands of dollars will it make? Find out on the next edition of Weekend Roundup!
