the-shining-overlook-hotel

I’m going to be honest and say that I have never read a Stephen King novel. On the other hand, I have seen pretty much every one of his movies/mini-series. I think that the man is a brilliant genius, and one of my favorite things to come from his mind will always be The Shining.

It seems that The Shining is all the rage right now, what with the Room 237 documentary. Today, I’m happy to announce that we’re getting two more Shining-centric pieces of pop culture. First, one of the former show runners on The Walking Dead, Glenn Mazzara, is developing The Overlook Hotel. The film would take place before the Torrance family visits the iconic hotel, and would most likely involve the spooky goings-on there. It would be near impossible to compare to the original Shining, but I wouldn’t mind revisiting the old place and see them try.

Next, Stephen King himself is working on a sequel to his novel entitled Doctor Sleep. The story centers around a middle-aged Danny Torrance who works in nursing home and uses his mental abilities to soothe the dying. He gets caught up with a cat and a girl, and a battle between good and evil transpires. Below is an official synopsis.

The novel features the now middle-aged Dan Torrance (the boy protagonist of The Shining) and the twelve-year-old girl, Abra Stone, that he must save from The True Knot. The True Knot are a group of almost immortal travelers who cross the country feeding off of children with the gift of “the shining.” Dan drifted for decades in an attempt to escape his father’s legacy, but eventually settled in aNew Hampshire town and works in a nursing home, where his remnant mental abilities provide comfort to the dying. With the aid of a cat that can foresee the future, Dan becomes “Doctor Sleep.” After meeting Abra Stone, an epic war between good and evil ensues.

I’m pretty excited for both projects, and Doctor Sleep just might be the first King novel that I ever read. Though, I must say that The Dark Tower series sounds the best. We’ll keep you posted as more King news comes our way here at DFAT!
