Welcome to week 2 of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.! I find that my weeks go a lot slower when I am eagerly anticipating the next installment in a show that I am REALLY enjoying and AOS fits into that category with flying colors!

Agents of SHIELD 084 03

So what exactly is an 0-8-4? Apparently no one really knows, but as Coulson states the last time there was one it was Thor’s Hammer, so its pretty serious. The second episode of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. picks right up where episode 1 left off. Our team has just come together and its very obvious they are having some problems working alongside each other. Well Coulson has no time for that, either that or he has a ton of faith in his new companions, but nonetheless they are off to Peru to investigate an 0-8-4. Discovered in an ancient Inca temple, a device that looks German in origin has shown up and SHIELD has to contain it. This device was created by Hydra with Tesseract technology, again some great references to Captain America: The First Avenger, as AOS works hard to make the show fit right into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Who else is after the item? The Peruvian army and some “rebels”, who end up being more of a distraction. Crossing paths with the team is Camilla, the leader of the Peruvian forces and a familiar face from Coulson’s past. The situation at the temple raises some good questions about the team that Coulson has chosen and that it has a lot of “kids” on it, in other words people who are not combat ready. But Coulson seems to have faith, and it pays off later in the episode after Camilla and her team infiltrate “The Bus” and hijack it. After everyone is captured, it takes a team effort to get loose, well Melinda May does most of it by dislocating her wrist to escape being tied up and frees the others. Eventually the Peruvians are stopped and the item gets shot into space where it can do no harm, for now. Our team is pretty proud of themselves and Coulson shows that he was right once again!

Agents of SHIELD 084 04

I really liked the overall theme of this episode, teamwork. Every one of these characters has a different background, and as Agent Ward keeps repeating “he works alone”, the plot here is that everyone has to put aside their differences and play the role they were brought on by Coulson to play. The contrast of brute force, and how easily they were all captured at first by the Peruvians, showed how weak they are when they don’t work together. On the other hand when it’s time to save the plane and retain the artifact, the team kicks all sort of ass as they blow a hole in their own airplane! Even though it’s a little far-fetched that an inflatable raft could seal a hole in a place, you have a little imagination when viewing any science fiction show. The dynamics between all the characters continues to be an interest plot and I love that they all have something different to contribute. We will see how all of this plays out over the season as new allies and relationships are formed.

In the end after you get that great warm and cozy feeling that the team is finally coming together we find out that The Rising Tide is more than just Skye in her van. We see Skye in communication with someone one and the message she sends when they request an update is that she “is in”. So what is the overall plan for Syke this season? Will she end up the villain or regretting her ways?

Agents of SHIELD 084 01

Oh and that surprise at the end of the episode that ABC kept promising? It totally kicked my ass! In just the second episode we get to see Sam Jackson’s Nick Fury show up and talk smack to Agent Coulson! After this who knows who’s going to show up down the road! So far this show has delivered both Maria Hill and Nick Fury, it probably won’t be too long until we see the likes of other heroes. A geek can only hope! Check the clip below if you want to see the hilarious cameo, do it quick before it gets taken down!
