When I initially heard that Amazon was going to do a Lord of the Rings television show, I didn’t think it was a good idea. The Peter Jackson-directed trilogy are one of the greatest trilogies of all time and arguably THE BEST. Now Amazon has said that they are doing a Lord of the Rings show, but it will be set BEFORE the events of the movies. This lends itself to a ton of new material that’s from the Tolkien archives as well as new material to be mined.
“We are delighted that Amazon, with its longstanding commitment to literature, is the home of the first-ever multi-season television series for The Lord of the Rings,” said Matt Galsor, a representative for the Tolkien Estate and Trust and HarperCollins. “Sharon [Tal Yguado, Head of Scripted Series] and the team at Amazon Studios have exceptional ideas to bring to the screen previously unexplored stories based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s original writings.”
Will we see the beginning of Aragorn and Arwen’s romance? Hows about tapping intoThe Silmarillion? We don’t know but they have hinted that this could even have potential for a spin-off series. Any of these ideas are good to me and we’ll be sure to keep you posted as to what happens here at DFAT!
