The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is having it’s fill of villains. With Spidey having the most expansive Rogue’s Gallery outside of Batman, there’s enough baddies to fill up his movies for years to come; but it seems like Sony and director Marc Webb want to jam them all into this film.

The latest viral campaign from The Daily Bugle, has an interview with inventor Spencer Smythe. In the comics, Smythe is the one who invents the “Spider Slayers”; a bunch of robots that are programmed to take out our Friendly Neighborhood Web-Slinger. Check out what he has to say in the interview below.

[box_light]OsCorp Industries wants to usher in an age of robotics, and has pumped piles of cash into robotics research. My interview mission? Pry some secrets out of OsCorp’s Head Engineer, Spencer Smythe.

DB: Can you summarize your recent work in one word?

Smythe: Mobility.

spencer smytheDB: Elaborate, please.

Smythe: If you wanted an elaborate answer, why did you ask for a single word?

DB: Tell me something no one else knows about your research.

Smythe: We have made significant breakthroughs in the field of manned flight technology fluidity of movement, speed and dexterity evinced by our larger robotic devices.

DB: Hardware or software?

Smythe: Both. One feeds the other. Better machines with enhanced artificial intelligence networks making informed, logical choices at greater speeds. Better bodies and better brains.

DB: And how do you see this being commercially applied?

Smythe (laughing): I don’t do marketing. Engineering innovation doesn’t result from a focus on revenue.

DB: There are rumors the NYPD is interested.

Smythe: Well, if you want to catch the right fly, you have to spin the right web.

DB: Very clever. One last thing, how is it working with your son?

Smythe: Alistair is a brilliant young engineer and I’m thrilled to see his career develop. I’d better watch my back or he’ll have my job before too long!

DB: Domo arigato.

So, just what actor will be playing the renowned doctor? Well, B.J. Novak is in the film as a yet-to-be-named character, and I feel he’ll be taking the role of Smythe. He recently interviewed with The Huffington Post to talk about his role.

“I’m in a couple of scenes. Yeah, I was never told whether or not I could say. I can say that I work at Oscorp. And I am someone from the comic books, someone from the original. So, yeah, I’m somebody. I wouldn’t say I’m pivotal, but I’m not an extra, either.”

Smythe is definitely not an extra, and he’s not pivotal, unless they decide to expand his character down the road. With Electro, Green Goblin, and The Rhino along with additional hints at Doc Ock and The Vulture; I’d say we don’t need to throw Spider Slayers into the mix. Guess we’ll just have to wait until May to find out!

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 stars: Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Dane DeHaan, Jamie Foxx, Colm Feore, Paul Giamatti, Felicity Jones, Chris Cooper, and Sally Field. The Marc Webb directed sequel swings into theaters on May 2, 2014.
