There really wasn’t going to be any competition this weekend with Peter Jackson‘s, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, opening up. The real question was: Just how much was it going to bring in on opening weekend? Well, the numbers are in, and the fantasy sequel took home $73.7mil. Combine that with International Box Office numbers, and the film took in a total of $205mil!

Title Weekend Total
1.  The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug $73,675,000 $73.7
2.  Frozen $22,184,000 $164.3
3.  Tyler Perry’s A Madea Christmas $16,000,000 $16
4.  The Hunger Games: Catching Fire $13,150,000 $356.9
5.  Thor: The Dark World $2,700,000 $198.1
6.  Out of the Furnace $2,320,000 $9.4
7.  Delivery Man $1,872,000 $27.9
8.  Philomena $1,756,000 $11
9.  The Book Thief $1,675,000 $14.8
10.  Homefront $1,637,000 $18.4

The Hobbit 2 really opened up to mediocre reviews, and that’s why the film didn’t destroy any Box Office records like the An Unexpected Journey did. Pacing issues and length were the main culprits, plus the first Hobbit movie didn’t leave a great taste in every critics mouth. This is all plagued Desolation from making as much as it could.

The rest of the Top 10 faired ok. Newcomer, A Madea Christmas, took in $16mil, which is probably great for Tyler Perry. Next week, we have the return of Ron Burgundy in Anchorman 2. I have a feeling that after this weekend’s tepid Hobbit numbers, Burgundy is going to dethrone the fantasy. Stay Tuned next week and find out here at DFAT!
