And the Winner for most financially successful adaptation of a video game franchise goes to…Sonic the Hedgehog. It seems as if the team at Sega took the criticism of the fans from the first trailers look, retooled it, and came up with a great movie. The film debuted at #1 here and America across the world earning $57 million domestically and $100 million Worldwide. That’s HUGE numbers for the little blue speedster and shows that the film is going to have some legs in the coming weeks.

We also had a few premieres this weekend including 3rd, 4th, and 10th place films Fantasy Island, The Photograph and Downhill. The first two earned $12 million each and with their budgets of less than $10 million, those are great numbers for them. Unfortunately the Julia-Louis Dreyfus and Will Ferrell film, Downhill, only took in $4.6 million and its truly is all downhill from here as far as Box Office numbers go. Last week’s winner Birds of Prey took in another $17 million and has crossed the $100 million mark Worldwide.

  • 1. Sonic the Hedgehog $57,000,000
  • 2. Birds of Prey $17,115,000
  • 3. Fantasy Island $12,400,000
  • 4. The Photograph $12,270,000
  • 5. Bad Boys for Life $11,305,000
  • 6. 1917 $8,090,000
  • 7. Jumanji: The Next Level $5,700,000
  • 8. Parasite $5,500,500
  • 9. Dolittle $5,050,000
  • 10 Downhill $4,671,000

Next weekend, we have another remake of Call of the Wild, this time starring Harrison Ford which actually looks pretty great. We also get the sequel to The Boy, which apparently is a thing. The Katie Holmes-starring film is likely to scare up some decent numbers and we’ll see how both films change the Top Ten on the next edition of Weekend Roundup.
