Even though Caesar and friends were faced with some pretty decent contenders, no one could take down Dawn of the Planet of the Apes at the Box Office this weekend. The film brought in another $36million and it beat out newcomers, The Purge: Anarchy, Planes: Fire & Rescue, and Sex Tape. The sequel to latter two didn’t even come close, but The Purge sequel did pretty decent with $28.4million.

The first Purge only cost $3million and went on to earn $65, while the new one got a bigger budget of $9million and has already earned almost $30mil. That’s pretty great figuring it lost it’s leads of Ethan Hawke and Lena Headey. I’m not sure why John Lasseter continues to live out his childhood cars and planes fantasies in Pixar, but I’m hoping that this opening weekend will finally stop him from making these movies.

The biggest upset though is from Jason Segel and Cameron Diaz, with Sex Tape. The two were trying to recreate the comedy lightning storm of Bad Teacher, but this time, failed to deliver. The film only received a 20% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and it’s Box Office revenue reflects that. See how everyone else in the Top Ten ranked alongside them.

Next week, we see the return of Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson to the big screen in his take on Hercules. The film is likely not going to take down the Apes, but then The Rock always has good success in his movies, so we shall see.
