**Update: Black Panther projections were low at the time of the article being written. Total is now at $201 million for 3-day opening and estimated to be $235 million by EOD Monday. Changes are reflected below.***

February was once the world of abandoned movies. Your obscure horror movies and rom-com’s went to die; but that is a thing of the past. With Deadpool a couple of years ago, the landscape changed. The film went on to earn over $780 million and changed the game on just how much superhero films could earn with more obscure characters. Now, we have a minority-driven superhero movie, another genre long said to be a failure, earning almost $201 million in it’s first three days. All Hail the King T’Challa, Kevin Feige, Chadwick Boseman, and all the creative geniuses behind Black Panther.

We still have one day left in this President’s Day weekend and BP will likely take in another $20 million by the end of Monday night. That’s INSANE and I couldn’t be happier. Director/Writer Ryan Coogler is 3-for-3 and so is his pairing with Michael B. Jordan who played Killmonger and solidified himself as one of the best Marvel villains to date. Last week’s winner, Fifty Shades Freed, dropped down to 3rd place with $16.9 million. While the rest of the Top Ten remained relatively status quo. You can check out those numbers below.

1. Black Panther $201 million

2. Peter Rabbit $17.3 million

3. Fifty Shades Freed $16.9 million

4. Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle $7.9 million

5. The 15:17 to Paris $7.7 million

6. The Greatest Showman $5.1 million

7. Early Man $3.2 million

8. Maze Runner: The Death Cure $2.5 million

9. Winchester $2.2 million

10. Samson $2 million

Next weekend will be dominated by Black Panther once again, even though it does have completion with Game Night and Annihilation. The former has received some stellar reviews but it’s also an R-rated sci-fi movie and it doesn’t have the mass appeal that BP has. Find out how much I’m right on the next edition of Weekend Roundup!
