Three months has gone by since the Krang invasion, and the Turtles are taking refuge in April’s country farmhouse.  Everything is quiet up there, with the exception of Mikey trying to be Farmer Joe and failing miserably.  Life must continue; so the Turtles, April and Casey continue with their martial arts practices, with an exception of Leo.  He is still recovering from the terrible onslaught he got from Shredder and his henchman.  Donnie is working on some sort of mutagenic medicine to cure Leo while Raph watches over Leo.  After a few days, Leo finally wakes up.  Everybody is elated, but is curious as to why his voice is different.  Donnie tells them that he suffered damage to his throat.  Raph takes the responsibility of nursing him back to health.  He trains him and makes sure Leo gets his strength back up, but Leo is having a really hard time.  He thinks that he may never be the same.

Casey tries to talk to April about where their relationship is going, but April tries to avoid the subject by telling Casey that it is far from her mind, and that they need to focus on getting Leo better and taking the city back from Shredder and the Krang.  The power goes out in the farmhouse and Raph goes out to get some wood for the fireplace.  TMNT Within the woods 01When Raph doesn’t come back after a while, the gang goes out searching for him.  Leo wants to help, but Donnie tells him to stay back and rest.  Still acting as the leader, Leo tells them to split up; Donnie goes with Mikey as Casey goes with April.  Donnie doesn’t like that plan, but agrees.  Donnie and Mikey find Raph in a shed, but he’s changed quite a bit.  He looks like a large mound vines, tree limbs and mulch with his signature red mask.  Donnie notices that a flask of green liquid is on a table.  He recognizes it as the mutagenic medicine he made for Leo.  Something has drunk the fluid, mutated into a something horrific and kidnapped Raph.  Suddenly they are grabbed by a bunch of vines and hung upside down.  A large creature enters the room and grabs Raph.  It starts sucking the mutagen from Raph and turns to Donnie.  He yells and struggles to break free.  April and Casey come rushing in to rescue them.  The creature, who Mikey names him “The Creeper”, runs after April and Casey.  After a chase in the woods, they get captured by The Creeper and hung by vines.  Leo, still weakened, suddenly appears and saves them all.  The Creepers mutagen is then injected back into Raph.  Everyone is safe once again.  Leo makes a decision to go back to the city and fight back.

It is not a big episode where there are epic fights, or big battles, but it definitely is an important one.  It shows how strong the bond between brothers are, that even though are main characters show vulnerability, their heart and strong will shines brightly.  The relationship between Donnie, Casey, and April gets explored a little more in this episode.  Raph’s character has changed somewhat by Leo getting injured.  After all these years with Raph butting heads with Leo and his role as leader, he finally lets his guard down and realizes that he needs Leo now more than ever.  Donnie is finally coming to grips that April won’t have the same feelings that he has for her.  The team is changing, and I hope for the better.  I also find it comical that their love for the carton shows is an homage to the old 80’s cartoons like Voltron and Thundaar the Barbarian.  It is a funny coincidence that the shows they watch are similar to old Turtles back in the 80’s as well, just something to think about.
