Drones are a big deal these days and have been ever since they were released onto the general market. The public has been buying them for various reasons, such as getting a bird’s eye view for their wedding pictures or just to race the machines. But did you know that the film industry has been utilizing drones for a number of years already? In fact, one of your favorite movies from the past half a decade could have been partially filmed by a drone. But you might not have realized because the quality of drone cameras is super impressive! Here are some amazing drone-filmed movies.
The Expendables 3
The Expendables 3 is all about high-octane, explosive action and the best possible way to shoot all that energy is to follow it on a mobile drone. Around thirty scenes were shot entirely by drone, and the majority of these are car chases and explosions. Thanks to the ability of the drones to get anywhere, they were able to fly right next to helicopters and trains to get right up close to the exciting action!
Even though you might think that this movie series would have been using drones for a good few years already, the very first James Bond movie to use drone was Skyfall. Do you remember that kick-ass opening scene in which James Bond chases a criminal on a motorbike? Well, all of that scene was filmed using a drone. This aerial method of filming was the best way to get all of the action in the frame, which would have been very difficult to achieve using only ground cameras.
Spectre
Of course, once the James Bond movies started to use drones, they just couldn’t get enough of it and continued to use this technology in Spectre. Do you fancy trying your hand at this same filming technique? If so, you can click here for more info on drones. But once you’ve got your own, you will need to practice with it to get your filming technique spot on. Remember that you also need special permissions to fly drones in some outdoor areas – even the crew of Spectre had to get permission to film with drones in the center of London.
The Wolf Of Wall Street
So far, all of the films on this list have been action movies. But that isn’t the only genre that uses drone cameras. Just look at The Wolf of Wall Street! A drone was needed to film a pool party. As there were a lot of actors at the party in quite a confined scene, a drone was the perfect machine to send up and fly around the party capturing scenes. The only other option would have been to send a helicopter with a camera up into the sky, but the party would have been too low down for the helicopter to fly at a safe height.
As you can see, drones are used in more movies than you might have originally expected!
