This episode does not have the same spark of excitement like the last two episodes, but it definitely has a more intimate and personal touch to it. Nathan and Mara are on the run from the Guard and Dwight in order for Nathan to try to save Audrey. They find a cabin deep in the woods and bunker down for Nathan’s mission to start. Meanwhile, back in Haven, Duke is still trying to deal with Jennifer’s death. He changes his appearance by cutting off his long hair, hoping it will help him to move on. While inspecting his place of business, the Gull, he notices that the place is somewhat ransacked. A woman appears and asks Duke her money to help her get out of Haven. Duke knows her and, her name is Jody. He asks her how is she and her family going to get out of Haven. She gets upset and starts bursting light beams from her body. It creates a lot of damage to the Gull, before she runs out of the building.
Nathan is at the cabin trying to get Mara to remember Audrey’s memories hoping that the memories will strengthen Audrey to come out. It works, but only for a brief moment. She pleads to Nathan to keep on doing what he is doing, because it is working. When Mara comes back, her personality is dark and mischievous. Mara’s character is fun to watch, she has this edge about her that makes her very dangerous and appealing. In this episode, we get to see more interaction with Nathan and Mara.
We also peel more layers of the mystery of Mara and her agenda. Watching Nathan trying to break Mara is a little boring. Making her pancakes and asking her what type of syrup Audrey would like, playing a song hoping that would bring Audrey out, didn’t really help much either. It got a little interesting when Mara started to throw insults at Nathan, it was funny.
Back in Haven, Dwight has his plate full. He has a death to investigate. Duke’s friend Jody, whose curse is having the ability to shoot energy beams from her body, is the main suspect, since the victim is her sister. Dwight also has the task of finding both Nathan and Mara, who unbeknownst to him, Duke is helping them evade capture for Nathan to do whatever he has to do. The mystery of the Trouble is sidelined in this episode to focus mainly on Nathan and Mara. But somehow Duke thinks that Mara can help Jody with her Trouble, since Mara created them in the first place.
After all his attempts, Nathan finally breaks Audrey free only to be interrupted by Duke barging into the cabin. With all the Troubles buried inside Duke, he is getting sick and Mara tells him that she is the only one who can save him. Mara can release a Trouble within Duke and in doing so that can help him get better. Duke agrees and Nathan has to make a decision right on the spot. Is he going to save Duke, or does he stay to continue his personal mission to save Audrey. In the end, he chooses Duke. Mara tells Duke that she needs to know which Trouble he would like to be released. Duke doesn’t know, but his grandfather’s journal has all the Troubles he released, and is buried with Duke’s deceased brother. Nathan goes out to search for it. Duke is getting worse, so Mara tells him that he needs to release a Trouble now, or else he will die. Duke agrees. Just when Mara is going to release a Trouble, Dwight storms in.
From the first episode to now, I see that the roles are reversed between Nathan and Duke. Duke takes Nathan’s role by being the person who is helping people of Haven with their Troubles. Where as Nathan has taken a more personal role to save the woman he loves, and by doing so he believes he is saving Haven. I think it is great to see Duke in a more authoritative role, because I believe he can do great things.
Is this going to be the season where most of the story centers on saving Audrey? I hope not, it can get pretty old. I want to see more Troubles stories, and possibly new directions to where Haven can go.
