No, the title does not mean what you probably think it means. It doesn’t have river rafting, canoes, or hillbilly questionable actions! What it does deal with is motherhood to the extreme! When we last saw Katrina, she ingested a powerful poisonous red spider that gave her convulsions. With Henry being responsible poisoning his mother, you know exactly that this is not going to end well for mom. Henry has taken pages from The Omen, where he believes he can bring his master out of Purgatory and into the real world by forcing Katrina to deliver the master demon through her. The bad news is that Katrina will be dead in the process.
The Good
-Ichabod blunders about the society’s electoral process and how it is not as impressive when he was around during the colonial times. It is comical to see Abbie explain to Ichabod how the polling works today.
-Katrina and Ichabod are finally together. It’s bittersweet due to the fact that Katrina is pregnant with a demon child that Henry poisoned her with. This introduces The Hellfire Club, a dark society determined to bring demons and everything bad on earth. Their main focus is to raise Moloch from Purgatory. This new direction and new adversaries brings new blood into the fight against The Witnesses.
-This is the first time Abbie and Katrina are seen outside Purgatory. Their view on Henry is different, but seeing these two fight together, trying to prevent Moloch from reaching our world is great. Abbie’s strength helps Katrina through this nearly impossible ordeal, and I think Katrina finally sees Abbie as an ally than a threat for Ichabod and her.
-When Ichabod has a one on one chat with his son, Henry, the conversation is extremely awkward, but compelling to watch. Henry’s hatred and discontent for his father and mother is pretty much confirmed, but at the end of the talk, Ichabod is finally able to see into Henry’s mind and realizes that he can be saved.
The Bad
-The idea of having the Aurora Borealis as a means to capture a demon and kill it is a bit of a stretch.- I think they came up with this idea out of desperation, because they couldn’t find anything else to save Katrina. It would have been a lot better if Katrina died giving birth, and her death will push Ichabod down a dark path for Abbie to find a way to bring him back.
-I didn’t like the fact that they made The Horseman of Death into a pathetic lovesick fool. With Henry taking Katrina away from him, the Headless Horseman is useless trying to stop him. The Headless Horseman is supposed to be a powerful force, and in this episode they portrayed him as a useless pawn in Moloch master plan. I don’t want to feel sympathy for him.
In Conclusion
This episode is a race against time to save Katrina from delivering The Horrid King, Moloch. Tension between Ichabod and Abbie continues to build between saving Henry, and saving the world from Henry. Katrina’s motherly instinct to protect her son is admirable, but maybe misguided. John Noble plays Henry with chilling perfection as a man hell bent on bringing the apocalypse, and destroying his parent’s happiness. The last scene we see lighting striking a wire that surges electricity into a mason glass jar. What is Henry up to, nothing good I hope?
