It wasn’t a surprise that Sam Raimi and Disney‘s, Oz the Great and Wonderful, would be #1 at the Box Office. It IS a little surprising that it’s the 3rd highest grossing film to debut in March, as well as the biggest opening weekend in 2013! Go Oz! The film pulled in an $80mil opening weekend! I’m pretty happy considering the film looked fantastic and Raimi IS a fantastic director, despite Spider-Man 3.
Title | Weekend | Total | |
1. | Oz the Great and Powerful | $80,200,000 | $80.2 |
2. | Jack the Giant Slayer | $10,020,000 | $43.8 |
3. | Identity Thief | $6,300,000 | $116.5 |
4. | Dead Man Down | $5,350,000 | $5.35 |
5. | Snitch | $5,100,000 | $31.8 |
6. | 21 & Over | $5,056,000 | $16.8 |
7. | Safe Haven | $3,800,000 | $62.8 |
8. | Silver Linings Playbook | $3,745,000 | $120.7 |
9. | Escape from Planet Earth | $3,270,000 | $47.8 |
10. | The Last Exorcism Part II | $3,120,000 | $12 |
Coming in a ‘not even close’ second was Jack the Giant Slayer with $10mil, whilst the rest of the Top Ten went down from there with newcomer, Dead Man Down, making just over $5mil; and The Last Exorcism II in last place with $3mil. Next week, we get The Incredible Burt Wonderstone. I feel that Oz will win out again, as the movie looks like it has more standing power than a bunch of aging magicians/actors. (Sorry Olivia Wilde).
We’ll keep you posted on next week’s, Weekend Roundup here at DFAT!
