Antonio Banderas isn’t really known for his science fiction roles, outside of Spy Kids and The Skin I Live In. In his newest film, Automata, he’ll be going fifty years in the future. His character is an insurance agent who investigates cases of defective androids and discovers something much more complex.

Here is the official synopsis:

Automata is an epic futuristic vision of a human civilization finally overtaken by artificial intelligence, as the Earth’s ecosystem verges on collapse. It tracks an insurance agent for robotics corp. ROC, who investigates a seemingly routine case of robot manipulation.

Jacq Vaucan, an insurance agent of ROC robotics corporation, routinely investigates the case of manipulating a robot. What he discovers will have profound consequences for the future of humanity.

Directed by Gabe Ibáñez, Automata also stars Birgitte Hjort Sørensen, Melanie Griffith, Dylan McDermott, and Robert Forster. It will be released in theaters and on VOD Oct. 10.
