12 Gauge Comics released the first issue of their newest mini-series this week. I.C.E: Critical Mass is the prequel to the original I.C.E. miniseries and introduces us to the main character of the series, Cole Matei, when he is just being recruited. I.C.E. stands for Immigration and Customs Enforcement, which is a government sanctioned team tasked with keeping our borders safe.
I was first introduced to this team in the page of Sherwood, Tx, another great comic from 12 Gauge. One of the main subjects of both books is human trafficking, a serious problem in this world. We see it first hand in I.C.E. as Matei and his appointed “training” officer Delgado. The two are out on a mission right away and things heat up quickly when they discover a cell of the traffickers. It is interesting that these kind of things happen in areas that are basically desolate, like Montana in this issue. I guess it makes sense that if you want to hide these remote locations are the best.
We meet the villains of the series and they are a real disgusting lot! From rape (implied) to kidnapping, these bad guys are on the highway to a good ass kicking by the end of the comic I hope. I can’t wait to find out what happens next! Just a reminder, these comics are for mature readers only so please keep the kiddos away from these graphic books. But if more realistic comics and storylines are your thing, then I recommend I.C.E. and the other comic books in the 12 Gauge Comics library.

In this prequel to the original ICE mini-series, Cole Matai is a new recruit at the Montana branch of The U.S. Immigration & Customs Enforcement agency. While shadowing decorated agent Ezra Delgado on a routine mission, all hell breaks loose and the new partners are baptized by fire. But this first battle is only the tip of the iceberg, as a terrorist plot to wipe out the Pacific Northwest is unfolding right at their feet.
