I’ve been a fan of The Ghostbusters and the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles since I was old enough to know what those two franchises were. I have found memories of seeing all the films and cartoons, and still love all the characters to this day. When I heard that IDW was going to combine the two universes into one comic, I knew it was something too crazy to believe; and that I’d have to get my hands on it!

If you don’t want to read the whole review and want the TL:DR version of it, it’s a fantastic marriage of both franchises and a completely plausible idea. For the rest of you, we’ll go ahead and proceed.

First of all, this is an idea that I’ve been waiting to see come to life forever. When you’re a kid and you play with toys, you don’t care which characters are Marvel and which are owned by Nickelodeon. You can have your Avengers consist of Raphael, Batman, Hulk, and Spawn and it just WORKS. You can tell that writers Erik Burnham and Tom Waltz obviously had the same type of childhood. They’ve crafted a story that uses dimensions and demons to bring the characters together, and it actually makes sense.

tmnt-ghostbusters-1-featuredOne of my favorite things about this book is just how well the voices of the characters come across. For the Ghostbusters, they did a really good job of making all of the their comic-book forms look like the actors. This was the first time that I had read a Ghostbusters comic, and it’s making me want to go back and read more! As for the Turtles, I’ve read a lot of the Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird originals, as well as the on-going from IDW; they continued to stay true to form in this adventure.

I can’t forget the artwork in these comics as it was absolutely breathtaking. The line and colorwork from Dan Schoening and Luis Antonio Delgado are both brilliant and make the scenes and characters pop out on every panel. I especially loved the parts where all eight characters were shooting from the proton packs and dealing punches to the demon Thralls.

When I first heard of this crossover at New York Comic Con last year, I thought it was a crazy idea. I blanked out when it was released and I did myself a serious disservice. I will now be tracking down the four individual issues and adding them to my collection. I loved every minute of this fast read and hope that we can see more adventures with Shell Shocking and Ghost Busting in the near future.
