We previously recorded a podcast that just focused on all of our favorite GEEKLY Things of 2016; but there were a lot of non-geeky things as well. Take a look at my list from 2016 and let me know if you agree or disagree in the comments.

Movies:
  • Deadpool
    • Meta, hilarious, and Ryan Reynolds played the character to a T. Doesn’t help that it made over $700 million.
  • Civil War
    • Captain America 3? The prequel to Infinity War? Who cares because it was epic!
  • Doctor Strange
    • Marvel continued to kick it out of the park as it introduced it’s weirdest superhero. The a-list actors all played their roles 100% and the visuals blew my mind.
  • Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows
    • If you’ve been yearning for the 90’s Turtles of Yore to come back, this is the movie for you. I LOVED IT with every fiber of my shell.
  • Star Wars Rogue One
    • The 1st time I watched it, I liked it. Upon the 2nd viewing I realized this movie has a ton of heart and was pretty amazing by making A New Hope a better movie. Vader killing a bunch of rebels goes down as one of the greatest things I’ve ever seen with my eyes.
  • Sing Street
    • 80s music by Joe Carney who did Once and Begin Again? I’m there, and it was easily one of the best movies I’ve seen last year and in years period.
Books:
  • Rogue One Catalyst – James Luceno
    • If you ever wanted to learn more about the Erso family, this is the book for you. It definitely contributed to me being a fan of Orson Krennic; something that wouldn’t have happened just watching the movie.
Television:
  • Daredevil Season 2
    • Elektra and Punisher made this season better than the first one. Something that I thought would have been an impossible task.
  • Luke Cage
    • Mixing old school hip-hop with a dramatic and compelling character was a thing of pure magic. Though Diamondback was kind of a shite villain, Mike Colter and Rosario Dawson kept this show going strong.
  • Stranger Things
    • I can’t even begin to start talking about how amazing this show is. The soundtrack, the story, the kids! Damn this was a highlight of 2016. Maybe even THE highlight.
  • The Get Down
    • Baz Luhrman makes his television debut in the most expensive of ways. A loving homage to the rise of the hip hop scene and one of the best soundtracks of a tv show.
  • Black Mirror Season 3
    • Thank the gods that Netflix bought this show from the BBC and gave it more episodes. Season 3 is perfection in the Twilight Zone of the Social Media generation.
Music:
  • Radiohead – Moon Shaped Pool
    • My favorite band released a new album. I guess it’s no surprises (get it) that it makes my list.
  • Run The Jewels 3
    • Holy F$CK. Comes out on Christmas and it’s the gift that keeps on giving. I haven’t taken it out of my rotation since that day.
  • The Weeknd – Starboy
    • Remember how Michael Jackson is dead? Well, he’s apparently still living vicariously through The Weeknd on his non-rap songs. Damn.
  • Kishi Bashi – Sonderlust
    • I’ve found his music a bit of a roller coaster ride. When it’s good, it’s great. When it’s bad it’s, meh. This whole album is the up part of the roller coaster?
  • Bon Iver – 22, A Million
    • Non, freaking, stop. This is one continuous song that lasts forever and gets played over and over and over
  • John Carpenter – Lost Themes
    • John Carpener’s second album of lost theme songs to movies he hasn’t made. This album is fantastic, it was made even more fantastic when I saw him perform it live in NYC!
Toys:
  • S.H. Figuarts
    • I know that Figurarts has other items outside of Star Wars and Nintendo but those are really the only two properties that I’ve purchased. Both have been stellar, including standouts like A New Hope Luke Skywalker and Fire Mario.
  • Hot Toys
    • I love Sideshow Collectibles as much as the next geek, but when it comes to getting down the likeness of a character, Hot Toys is unsurpassed. Their Deadpool, Suicide Squad, and Star Wars figures were legendary this year and justified the hefty price tag on every figure purchased.
  • Lego
    • I got back into Legos in a big way this year and my wallet is seeing the results from that. Scooby Doo, Marvel, DC, Star Wars, and so many other properties made Lego a huge winner on my 2016 toy list.
Comics:
  • The Omega Men – Tom King
    • I couldn’t stop reading this comic. I came to it late in the game but tracked down all of the issues and binged it. Star Wars but with more graphic violence.
  • Superman: American Alien – Max Landis
    • Goddamn Max Landis, keep writing comics. He made my least favorite superhero a lot more cool and not suck and I couldn’t wait for each issue to be released.
  • Vader Down – Jason Aaron, Kieron Gillen
    • The entier Vader comic run is pretty great, but this arc is a thing of pure magic. It shows you exactly why Vader is the most feared bad guy that was ever created.
  • The Fix
    • Mark my words, this comic will be a television series or movie within the next 2 years. It’s hilarious to a disgusting degree and I love the characters and it’s only been 6 issues.
  • 4001 A.D.
    • Leave it to Valiant to tie their characters together in a futuristic and epic way. I had a lot of fun seeing where all of their lives ended up and loved how it all tied together. It only solidified why it’s one of the best comic companies around.

That’s it folks! 2016 was a pretty crazy year for movies, collectibles, and more; and 2017 looks like it’s going to be even better! Hope you had as much fun as I did and we’ll see you in 365!
