Happy new comic book day Towelites! Some great new books hitting comic shops today so get down there are pick up your favorite funny book! Here are my pulls and highlights
Book of the Week
Superman’s Pal Jimmy Olsen #1 (Of 12)(Cover B Ben Oliver) (DC) Matt Fraction, Steve Lieber, Ben Oliver
Since it’s announcement I have been eagerly anticipating the release of this comic. I am a sucker for the old Kirby comics and they were some of my favorites growing up. Now Matt Fraction is taking a modern day crack at the character and I couldn’t be more excited!
Firefly #8 (BOOM!) Greg Pak, Dan McDaid, Lee Garbett
Fans of the Firefly franchise can always rest easy knowing that there are at least stories out there that continue the tales of the show that shouldn’t have been cancelled. I am still amazed that we haven’t seen something new yet….
Jim Henson Storyteller Sirens #4 (BOOM!) Sarah Webb, Cory Godbey
I love this series, a bunch of one-shot stories highlighting a culture’s beliefs and fairy tales. Do you remember this TV show? I wish it would make a comeback!
Aquaman #50 (Cover B Ryan Sook Card Stock Variant) (DC) Kelly Sue DeConnick, Viktor Bogdanovic, Ryan Sook, Robson Rocha, Daniel Henriques
Year of the Villain is upon us and all of your favorite DC books are getting the villain treatment. We’ll see how this “card-stock” variant gimmick goes. The series is hitting high notes at least!
Batman #75 (Card Stock Variant) Year of the Villain: The Offer Tie-In (DC) Tom King, Mikel Janin, Gabriele Dell’Otto, Tony S. Daniel
City of Bane rocks Batman’s world as Year of the Villain pushes forth! Another great looking variant, too bad I don’t collect all of these.
Justice League #28 (Cover B Terry Dodson & Rachel Dodson) (DC) James Tynion IV, Javi Fernandez, Terry Dodson, Rachel Dodson
Do yourself a favor if your’re not reading this series AND READ IT! The main story line for Year of the Villain has been built through this book and it continues to make my jaw drop every week! One of the best storytelling teams in the industry!
Pearl #11 (DC) Brian Michael Bendis, Michael Gaydos
One more issue after this and we will finally get to read the end of this one. Pearl was extended to 12 issues for good reason and if you haven’t read then jump on that trade when it comes out!
Vampirella #1 (Cover B – Ross) (Dynamite) Christopher Preist, Ergun Gunduz, Alex Ross
This is a big deal, it’s the 50th anniversary of Vampirella! With an amazing creative team attached, you’ve read the Free Comic Book Day issue, now read the series!
Transformers Ghostbusters #2 (Of 5)(Cover A Dan Schoening) (IDW) Erik Burnham, Dan Schoening
I ain’t afraid of no transforming ghosts! Or am I? This is a great crossover idea and I am surprised it took this long to get made.
Loki #1 (Marvel) Daniel Kibblesmith, Ozgur Yildirim
Spinning out of War of Realms we have a brand new Loki series. With Marvel’s big re-vamp coming who knows where the publisher will end up in the public eye. Let’s hope for great things, this book is a good start.
Punisher Annual #1 (Marvel) Karla Pacheco, Adam Gorham, Dustin Weaver
I, unlike some, enjoy a good annual. Especially if I haven’t been reading the on-going and I am looking for a one-off story or two. This one looks ridiculous thus I am going to read it!
Silver Surfer Black #2 (of 5) (Lim Variant) (Marvel) Donny Cates, Tradd Moore, Ron Lim
Read this book. Nuff said.
Star Wars Tie Fighter #4 (Of 5) (Marvel) Jody Houser, Roge Antonia, Tommy Lee Edwards, Ig Guara
The TIE-in comic (haha) to this summer’s crossover event continues! The Alphabet Squadron book is getting rave reviews so I need to read that ASAP and then I’ll snag this in collected form when it’s released. What a time to be a Star Wars fan!
Blade Runner 2019 #1 (Titan) Michael Green, Andres Guinaldo, Artgerm, Mike Johnson
I had heard that this book was coming and then I forgot. It almost flew under my radar and thank the gods that I write this article. I am excited to read the first in-canon story outside of the movie realm!
Life And Death Of Toyo Harada #5 (Of 6) (Valiant) Joshua Dysart, CAFU, Butch Guice, Kano
Finally today, is Toyo dead yet?
