I’m excited to see The Amazing Spider-Man 2 in IMAX in a couple of weeks, but more than that, I’m pumped to see The King of All Monsters in towering cinematic form for the first time since I saw that despicable one in 1998. Director Gareth Edwards seems to have gotten the formula right, and from all the footage that has been shown, he’s recreated our favorite Toho Kaiju, just as we’ve remembered him for the last fifty years!

Director Gareth Edwards talked about what went into the design process:

I thought it was going to be the easiest thing in the world — designing Godzilla, but everyone has an opinion. But designing Godzilla was the hardest thing in the world, because everyone has an opinion.

. . . I feel the best designs are strongest when they work in silhouette. We built him in 3-D and designed him in black and rotated him. If you saw a sign warning ‘Godzilla crossing,’ you’d know right away it was not a deer or a bear.

Below, we have a new tv spot and a featurette that talks to Edwards on his design process and what went into making this massive movie. Check them out!

The film is being directed by Gareth Edwards. It will also star: Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Elizabeth OlsenJuliette BinocheDavid Strathairn,  Bryan CrantsonKen Watanabe, and Richard T. Jones also star.  Godzilla opens in 3D on May 16, 2014.
