I don’t know about you guys, but I have been waiting quite a while for the premier of Gracepoint. I didn’t get a chance to watch Broadchurch last year, which really made me mad considering it’s both David Tennant and Arthur Darvill, but still, I’m excited to see that they’re recreating it for the U.S. and it’s starring Tennant and Anna Gunn!
The show starts off with the Solano family not realizing that their 12 year old son Danny is missing. It shows the small town they live in, how everyone knows everyone, and that life there seems care free and happy. Obviously this is a town that doesn’t see much in the way of crime or homicides, but as we all know, that’s about to end.
David Tennant plays Emmett Carver, the new Detective in town, and has apparently taken what was supposed to be Ellie Miller’s (Anna Gunn) job. They don’t really get along, which is pretty predictable, but I’m sure they will form a tight relationship before the 10 episodes are over.
Basically at this point the first episode is character set up. We know that Danny is dead, found on the beach, but we also know that he didn’t die there, didn’t jump from the cliff and according to the coroner the cause of death was blunt force trauma to the front of the head. We also know that he wasn’t abducted, he snuck out of the house.
The only real suspicious thing they showed was his best friend, Ellie Miller’s son Tom, deleting a bunch of texts and clearing out his computer after he found out that Danny was dead. I’m sure that had something to do with a stupid thing Danny and Tom did and he didn’t want to get in trouble because of it, but who knows, maybe he knows something.
The other only major players they showed in this episode were the stupid kid reporter Owen (Kevin Zegers) and the Wildlife guy Jack (Nick Nolte). Neither one really showed any signs to make me suspicious of them. Owen is just a stupid, ambitious reporter who decides it’s the best idea ever to print that it was Danny Solano that was killed before anyone gave the go ahead for the release. Jack was just a guy on a boat, a little weird, but nothing that screamed “KILLER” to me, at least not yet. Aside from them we really haven’t met many of the people in town. We did see a lady with a dog a few times, but we don’t know anything about her yet.
At this point I don’t even have a potential suspect in mind, but I’m excited to start coming up with my own theories along the way. I honestly love these kinds of shows, trying to figure out who did it and why. I’m hoping that you guys will help me get it figured out.
