Looks like all of the rumors surrounding The Joker origin movie starring Joaquin Phoenix and written/directed by Todd Phillips (The Hangover) is officially a go picture for Warner Bros. and DC according to THR. The film will begin shooting in September with a budget of $55 million. Obviously this is a much lower budget than the usual DC films but this is meant to be a much smaller film.
We don’t have any idea of the plot and how/if this ties into the greater DCEU but it’s an interesting experiment to be sure as to see if a film like this will work. There’s still talk that Jared Leto will get his own solo film and there’s no word if both of these Jokers are the same at different times, exist in different multiverses or what.
We’ll keep you posted as more information is surely to come out at next week’s San Diego Comic Con and hopefully shed a bit more light as to what DC has in mind for the bigger picture.
