In 2010, Lindsey Stirling appeared on the TV show America’s Got Talent. Here are a couple of the comments that were made before she was voted off the show by the “expert” judges.

You’re not untalented, but you’re not good enough to get away with flying through the air and trying to play the violin at the same time

-Piers Morgan

You need to be in a group. … What you’re doing is not enough to fill a theater in Vegas.

-Sharon Osbourne

Now it’s 2014 and Lindsey Stirling has two albums, one that has gone gold, and she sells out shows across the nation and world. The music video for her amazing song Crystallize was the number 8 most watched video on YouTube in 2012 with over 42 million views! Stirling was also nominated for The Billboard Music Award in 2014 for the Top Electronic /Dance Album. Unfortunately she lost to Daft Punk, but there is no excuse needed there.

The best thing about all of her fame? Stirling did all of this on her own, promoting herself without a major label. But one of her greatest pieces of work is how I discovered her in the first place, her The Legend of Zelda tribute. This is one of the most amazing Geekly things I have seen in my life, and if you are a fan of the game you’ll love it! Check it out!

Amazing right?! But Stirling’s love of all things Geekly doesn’t stop there! In collaboration with some other artists she also composed/helped out on songs including Star Wars, Game of Thrones, Skyrim, Assassin’s Creed, Phantom of the Opera, Mission Impossible, and more! It was this type of fandom that got me into her music, but it was her amazing talent and original pieces that hooked me for life.

Stirling’s main focus is to mix electronic music with her amazing ability to play violin and dance at the same time. By mixing in the sounds of dubstep and hip-hop, Stirling has created a very unique sound and may have created a new genre all together! I have always been a fan of the violin. Growing up, I spent 8 years of my life learning to play, which also helped to nurture my love for the classical side of the genre; but being a lover of all types of music is what really turned me on to her music.

IMG_0762I had the chance to catch Lindsey in concert last week at Terminal 5 in New York City, and it was one of my top 5 favorite concerts ever! When you watch Lindsey’s music videos, it’s easier to believe that she can do what she does so well. But when it comes to a live performance, I was really curious to see how perfect she was at her craft. Being someone who played the violin for many years I understand how hard it can be at times to just sit there and play, I can’t imagine how she can jump around and dance and still play so well! For a bit I questioned if she was playing along to a track, but you could definitely hear when she makes a mistake. Not that she made many, but hearing them actually made me appreciate the music more.

Lindsey Stirling is one act not to be missed. She has a huge, diverse following across the globe and the attendance at this show alone showed that. I mean this is New York City, so seeing a mixed crowd of people is not unusual but there were people of all ages and all walks of life at the show and I loved it. Nothing like great music to bring together all types of people!

Most importantly, Lindsey loves her fans. As the crowd loudly chanted her name on numerous occasions throughout the night, Lindsey’s presence on stage grew. She graciously put all of the positive energy into her performance. She took the time to also remind everyone that they too, if you work hard at it, anything is possible. Lindsey Stirling is the perfect example of why you should never give up on your dreams.

Lindsey Stirling in concert gets an A for AMAZING and AWESOME! She will be in the States until September, so check out her Tour Calendar for all her upcoming shows! For those of you Towelites overseas, she is making many international stops! So stay TOONED!
