Captain america 2 The winter soldier banner

The spy-thriller and sequel to Captain America, The Winter Soldier, is set to hit theaters in 2014. I can’t wait, Captain America was one of my favorite films of Phase One and the Winter Soldier is one of my favorite storylines in comics. Here are a couple of interview tidbits with S.H.I.E.L.D. Agents Maria Hill (Cobie Smulders) and Nick Fury (Sam Jackson).

Cobie Smulders Maria Hill Agents of Shield

IGN: Having introduced her in The Avengers, what’s it like now taking her into Captain America: The Winter Soldier? The Cap movie sounds like it’s fairly S.H.I.E.L.D.-centric in how it’s set up.

Smulders: Yeah, the world is a very unstable place. You know, there’s so much I can’t say… It’s very hard. But Cap and Romanoff are basically Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., and they go off and do one thing. We’re overseeing everything, and there’s a communication breakdown… I can’t say anything! But it is very much about S.H.I.E.L.D. — it’s all about S.H.I.E.L.D., basically. But there are so many different components to that agency. Maria plays a small part in the S.H.I.E.L.D. universe, but I like to think an important one. We’ll see.

Q. When moviegoers see Nick in Winter Soldier next year, what will they learn about him next?

A. You see Nick Fury the office guy, him going about the day-to-day work of S.H.I.E.L.D. and the politics as opposed to that other stuff. It’s great to have him dealing with Captain America in terms of being able to speak to him soldier to soldier and try to explain to him how the world has changed in another way while he was frozen in time. Some of the people who used to be our enemies are now our allies — him trying to figure out, “Well, how do we trust those guys?” or “How do we trust the guys that you didn’t trust who don’t trust you? And explaining to him that the black and white of good guys/bad guys has now turned into this gray area. Nick lies to him all the time, too. (Laughs) But he’s trying to help him navigate the waters of the new sharks that he doesn’t know anything about.

Some other great media from the Cap-verse, the Iron Man 3 Blu-ray will have the next Marvel One-Shot on it featuring Hayley Atwell as she reprises her role as Peggy Carter in Agent Carter! Look for the first adventure in Phase 2 to hit stores in September!

After the cataclysmic events in New York with The Avengers, Marvel’s “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” finds Steve Rogers, aka Captain America, living quietly in Washington, D.C. and trying to adjust to the modern world. But when a S.H.I.E.L.D. colleague comes under attack, Steve becomes embroiled in a web of intrigue that threatens to put the world at risk. Joining forces with the Black Widow, Captain America struggles to expose the ever-widening conspiracy while fighting off professional assassins sent to silence him at every turn. When the full scope of the villainous plot is revealed, Captain America and the Black Widow enlist the help of a new ally, the Falcon. However, they soon find themselves up against an unexpected and formidable enemy — the Winter Soldier. Starring Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, Sebastian Stan, Anthony Mackie, Cobie Smulders, Frank Grillo, Georges St-Pierre, Hayley Atwell, Toby Jones, Emily VanCamp and Maximiliano Hernández with Samuel L. Jackson and Robert Redford.

Of course besides Avengers 2 (which stands in its own category), Guardians of the Galaxy may ALOMST top Cap 2 as my most anticipated movie in Phase 2. I am excited to see a space epic set in the Marvel Universe and GOTG is set to blow our minds I’m sure. Check out this funny rap sheet  for Peter Quill aka Star-Lord from promotional material at SDCC and an interview with Djimon Hounson (Gladiator) who plays one of the newly introduced Kree, Korath the PursuerHere’s to Marvel for putting the comic back in comic book!

Collider:  At Comic-Con, you talked about how important it was for you to be a part of Guardians of the Galaxy because of your son’s recognition of the lack of diversity in superhero movies.  Does that make it extra exciting to be a part of the film and to be working on that now?

DJIMON HOUNSOU:  The lack of diversity, specifically in genre films and the superheroes our kids grow up watching and emulating, they can’t really identify with.  When you see the same thing, over and over again, and it seems not to speak of you and your heritage and your culture, it leaves you out of this world, a little bit.  It gives a certain social distance with your world.  So, it was very shocking when my son said that.  It shocked me, but at the same time, it was not a surprise.  It’s one of those things that even I have been looking for.  I’m looking for a hero of my kind, and I’m looking for a shero of my kind.  Now, we have Zoe Saldana, who is a shero for minorities, and that’s kind of nice.
