Screenwriter duo Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely have had a little experience already in the Marvel Movie U, they wrote the Cap film The First Avenger, well of course with a little help from Mr. Joss Whedon. Now they are working on both Thor: The Dark World and Captain America: The Winter Soldier! That’s pretty impressive and also a great way to keep the same tone across the properties as we build the road to The Avengers 2! Here’s a snippet of their interview with /Film, head on over there to check out the full script!
/FILM: I saw you guys speak soon after Captain America: The First Avenger came out and you were already working on Captain America 2. Since then, how much has the script changed? Was it always the Winter Soldier, did it have Black Widow, Nick Fury and everyone else?
Stephen McFeely: When you saw us speak, we probably were just in the throwing stuff against a wall phase. So that would’ve been like July or June of 2011. For those, say, next three or four months, it was a process of us going back and forth with Marvel and thinking what about “this, and what about this?”. And eventually that sort of steered down into an outline and then we started writing that outline in late 2011. So from the summer, it changed plenty, but from the outline in late that year, it’s been the same

Captain America: The Winter Soldier hits theaters in April 2014!
I was sitting at dinner one night and said to myself “Oh $@#&” Iron Man 3 is coming out in 2 weeks! That’s when it hit me that Phase 2 is finally upon us! Before the movie hits we are getting more and more details and rumors are brewing over certain characters and their involvement in the film and what it could lead to down the road. One of those characters is Ellen Brandt, played by Stephanie Szostak, who of course is the ex-wife of Ted Sallis‘, aka Man-Thing. Sallis, in the comics, was working with the Super-Soldier Serum, which many seem to be doing in the Marvel Movie U, so it isn’t to far in left field that we may see a reference to the character in Iron Man 3. BUT with talks of a Doctor Strange movie coming in Phase 3, rumors are that Mr. Sallis may be making an appearance in the film. In Iron Man 3, it seems that we are being introduced to Brandt somewhat down the timeline from the accident that lead to Sallis’ mutation. It may also explain the involvement of A.I.M. in the movie. According to a “junior novelization” of the movie, Brandt is depicted in the movie with a disfigured face and a missing arm, which leads to and to her involvement with the Extremis Virus in the film., so it COULD BE that Man-Thing is already roaming around out there somewhere.
For those of you who are looking for a “magical” version of the Mandarin in the film, get ready to be disappointed, because Sir Ben Kingsley‘s character will be very grounded in the real modern world. Recently both the Thespian actor and director Shane Black sat down with Total Film to a spelled it out for fans:
“We decided very early on we liked the idea of taking Michael Crichton type elements and mingling them with a real world Tom Clancy environment,” Black said. “It’s funny, I look at these blogs and some people are saying, ‘What about The Mandarin’s magic space rings? They should shoot lasers.’ I almost want to apologize in advance to the people who want to see lasers shoot out of his rings because it’s not going to happen.”
“There are demonic layers,” teases Sir Ben Kingsley when asked about what we should expect from his take on the character. “He’s in a state of solitude a lot of the time, and there’s nothing to give him a boundary. I go crazy. You can put him in quite a different category from Whiplash, who’s reliant on brute force. The Mandarin is reliant on manipulation of the media. He’s an all-pervading presence through modern technology. He’ll hack into your cell phone. He’ll broadcast across the nation on TV.”
