Towelites! It’s time once again to round up the latest news from Marvel Studios!

ant-man sliderCould Ant-Man be Marvel’s first flop? With as much trouble as the project has had, I really hope that they can get things together. I love the idea of Paul Rudd in the main role, but I am very skeptical about an older Hank Pym and changing canon that much. Especially with Ultron being featured in the next Avengers movie, but we have to have faith in Marvel. At SDCC we did get confirmation on two major characters that would be in the film.

The Wasp MarvelFirst up, Evangeline Lilly will be portraying Hope Van Dyne, who is presumably the daughter of Hank Pym and Janet Van Dyne. Now in Ant-Man, Pym will be played by Michael Douglas and who knows who in flashbacks. Janet Van Dyne, aka The Wasp, a MAJOR founding member of the original Avengers has not yet been introduced in the Cinematic Universe. So who knows what will happen with that. Will Lilly take on the mantle of The Wasp in the movies? We’ll have to wait and see!

Yellowjacet MarvelAnother major name from the comics will be featured and that’s Yellowjacket. Corey Stoll, who plays Darren Cross, will play the villainous character. In the film, it’s rumored that Cross and Pym are business partners and they develop the tech together, but the team splits when Cross starts to take the company in a bad direction, thus having Pym give Scott Lang (Rudd) the Ant-Man suit. In the comics, Yellowjacket is one of the many incarnations of Hank Pym, so again a major deviation from the known Marvel continuity.

Of course Marvel has the golden touch, we’ll have to see how Guardians does this weekend and then we can judge what Marvel can do with their more obscure characters! Ant-Man begins filming this August and hits theaters in July of 2015!

Here’s a roundup of the rest of the SDCC news!

  • Daredevil will premiere on Netflix in May 2015.
  • Agent Carter will feature the character of Edwin Jarvis, in the flesh.
  • GuardianS of the Galaxy 2 will be written and directed by James Gunn. Marvel Studios has set the film for 2017
  • Avengers: Age of Ultron footage was shown, here’s a break down of that footage!

[box_light]The team, in a penthouse, play a round of trying to pick up Thor’s hammer. Tony Stark puts his Iron Man hand on, Captain America makes a go. Then Ultron crashes the party. Iron Man gets in a big super suit as apocalypse dawns again. A lot of crash-bang-boom, like the finale of the first film. Playing throughout the trailer is a child singing, “I Got No Strings” from Disney’s Pinocchio. Last shot in the clip shows all the Avengers lying dead in a massive heap against a black sky, with Tony Stark the only one standing alive.[/box_light]

So Marvel did not announce more of their Phase 3 slate, which I expected. They are pretty smart when it comes to not overwhelming the public with news and concentrating on their current projects. I am very excited to see GOTG this week, have you picked up your tickets yet?!
