Marvel’s Daredevil is the one project that we have not heard a lot from and I think that’s a great thing. Especially these days as every internet site wants to throw spoilers at you. When this panel was announced for NYCC I knew that we would be finally seeing the cast together on stage for the first time, along with the possibility of seeing some footage.

Remember this is MARVEL! There was no doubt in my mind that we would be treated to something special, but I did not expect to see FIVE clips from the upcoming exclusive Netflix show! They were very strict about cameras, so much so that Marvel had security guards in black suits, who they called Agents of SHIELD, walking around with night-vision gear. Serious stuff. So of course we have nothing to share with you video-wise but you can check out our gallery from the panel, along with the first official picture of Matt Murdock, and concept art that was released TODAY at NYCC! So Marvel was pretty generous with what they show at this years show.

The panel was MC’d by Marvel TV’s Executive Producer Jeph Loeb. He started off by talking about the shared world of Netflix and the upcoming series beyond Daredevil. These, as we all know, include Luke Cage, Iron Fist, and Jessica Jones, with the four heroes teaming up for The Defenders. Loeb also wanted us to know that all of the rumors online about the casting of the other shows is completely false. Before they brought out the panel guests, Loeb unleashed the first clip ever shown for the series. Here is our recap of it:

Karen Page’s Apartment

  • Scene is shot very dark and with dark blue tones
  • Karen Page (Deborah Ann Woll) comes into her apartment looking scared. She reaches up into a vent or pipe and finds a key or lighter. You can’t really tell what it is
  • As she walks towards the camera an attacker is revealed and slams her twice up against the wall
  • He grabs what she drops, from the hidden spot, and picks it up. He then walks towards her and flicks open a blade
  • Just before he is about to attack her again, the door opens up and it’s our first look at Daredevil (Charlie Cox).
  • He is wearing an all black outfit, no padding, no leather and the top half of his face is hidden. You can see his full reveal below.
  • Daredevil and the attacker face off in a brutal fight scene. Not too many quick cuts, director Steven S. DeKnight luckily keeps the camera on the action.
  • the scene is very dark and it’s hard to tell who’s fighting whom
  • Daredevil and mysterious attacker slam into the window and fall out unto the pavement where it’s raining
  • The use of sound is done very well throughout the scene as soon as Daredevil appears. It’s amplified and you can tell that it’s how Daredevil is using it to his advantage.

Loeb then brought out the panel, they included Toby Moore (Wesley: Kingpin’s right-hand man), Bob Gunton – Shawshank Redepmtion (Leland Owlsley), Ayelet Zurer – Man of Steel (Vanessa: Fisk’s love interest), Vondie Curtis-Hall – ER (Ben Urich), Elden Henson – Hunger Games (Foggy Nelson), Deborah Ann Woll – True Blood (Karen Page), and Vincent D’Onofrio – Men in Black (Kingpin/Wilson Fisk). When it was time to bring out the star of the show Loeb told a funny story about Joe Quesada and how he ALWAYS wanted Charlie Cox – Stardust to play the part, even before they had the rights to the character!

“One day the phone rings, and Joe Quesada says to me, ‘I found Matt Murdock.’ I didn’t know what he meant,” Loeb said. “‘There’s this actor. He’s gonna be on Daredevil.’ and I said to him, ‘We don’t have that property right now.’ He said, ‘Well we will.’ The person Joe picked out that day is the person that we cast, and that is Charlie Cox.”

The final guest for the panel was show-runner Steven S. DeKnight (Spartacus). An amazing cast and an amazing panel!

Loeb then answered the question that was on everyone’s minds, where was Rosario Dawson (Trance)? She had prior commitments in LA but Loeb told every one that she really wanted to be there. It was then Loeb revealed to the crowd who Dawson would be playing, “a nurse who works at night”, by showing us another clip!

Claire Temple’s Apartment

  • Daredevil wakes up in an apartment and doesn’t know where he is.
  • The scene is dark and red tones
  • He’s met with Claire Temple (Rosario Dawson). She has blue gloves on and tells him that she found him in her dumpster
  • He looks around, clearly blind, and reaches for his face mask. He tells her that she’s seen his face and shouldn’t know even that much about him
  • He asks her for her name and she gives it to him. He doesn’t give his in return.
  • She tells him that he’s been very beat up, been stabbed, possible concussion, and broken ribs.
  • He asks why she didn’t call the police when she found him, and says that she must be hiding something herself

Here’s a short rundown of the character Claire Temple:

Claire Temple is the ex-wife of Bill Foster and a romantic interest of Luke Cage. In her earliest potrayals, she was a nurse for Dr. Noah Burstein and his 42nd Street Storefront Clinic. Claire encountered an injured Luke Cage and the two soon became romantically involved. Claire left Luke temporarily when her ex-husband Bill Foster asked her to help him in Los Angeles. Despite Claire’s pleas for Cage not to follow her, Luke did pursue Claire to California and helped free her ex-husband from the Circus of Crime. Luke and Claire reconciled and the two returned to New York City. Soon Claire tires of Luke’s constant exposure to dangers and the two seperated. Claire went on to become a doctor and served as such in the New York City area.

So the case could be that we see Dawson show up in the Luke Cage series as well, but with her star-power I’m sure she won’t be in these series’ for too long. Especially since Jessica Jones is one of the main characters, most of you know how that story goes. For those of you who don’t no spoilers here.

Loeb went on to talk to the cast about their experiences on the show so far and everyone was very enthusiastic about being a part of this universe. When the attention was turned to Ayelet Zurer, she shared her experience working with D’Onofrio and when she mention “the painting”, it was time to bring on another clip!

Vanessa and Fisk meet

  • It opens in an art gallery and we see Vanessa (Ayelet Zurer).
  • She approaches a man whose back is to us
  • He’s wearing an all black suit and is bald. It’s Wilson ‘Kingpin’ Fisk (Vincent D’Onofrio)
  • She asks Fisk if he was just looking or if he was interested, he responds interested
  • The painting is whites on white and she talks about how a painting shouldn’t matter how much it is, only how it makes the person feel.
  • He says that the painting makes him feel ‘alone’

D’Onofrio tells the crowd that Wilson Fisk is both a child and a monster. I can’t think of anyone else I would want to play the role of the Kingpin. Just seeing D’Onofrio on stage with his bald head was enough to give me chills. I can’t wait to see him in full villain mode!

Another highlight was hearing Deborah Ann Woll talk about the difference of being on a show like True Blood and Daredevil, and that she really likes to play “flawed” characters. She was so dedicated to the role that she left her last shoot on True Blood and came right over to the set and started filming, all within a 24-hour time period!

Finally Loeb praised Charlie Cox about his work ethic on set and his ability to play the role of such a diverse and deep character like Matt Murdock. Cox seemed a little nervous on stage, but who can blame him at this point. Not many people have seen much from this new series and there’s a lot riding on his shoulders. But when Marvel comes to you as their dream star, it doesn’t get much better than that! Cox then praised the stunt team saying, “I should mention, we have an incredible stunt team – the stuff they do looks like CGI but it’s not!“.

We were then treated to another clip!

The Law Offices of Nelson and Murdock

  • Karen Page is serving Matt Murdock and Foggy Nelson (Elden Henson) food
  • This is dark, even though it’s during the day and has more blue tones. Foggy and Matt are both wearing blue
  • She is thanking them for their lawyer work with food and offers to fix up their law office
  • You can tell that it’s pretty sparse and in some rough shape

The room was then opened up to a Q&A session. Before the panel ended Loeb amazingly gave us one more clip! It was an extended scene of the first one we were shown, but extended past the part where they fell out the window. Here’s what happened!

Extended Fight Scene

  • Daredevil is on the ground and it’s raining and it goes to a flashback
  • The flashback is shot very dark as well, this time with darker yellows
  • His dad comes in the house where little Matt Murdock is asleep on the kitchen table surrounded by his homework
  • His dad wakes him up and tells him he needs to study and not end up “like him”
  • The dad takes a bag of frozen peas out of the freezer and puts them on his face. He then takes Matt’s hands and puts it on his face so he can feel where he’s been beat up.
  • He then tells his son “come on Matty, get to work”
  • Goes back to the present and Daredevil spits out blood and starts to fight with the attacker again
  • He uses the rain to amplify his sonar ability and locate a chain that’s bouncing off a metal pipe, wrap it around his neck, and finally knock him out
  • The clip ends with Karen coming outside and asking “Who? What the Hell” just happened.
  • Daredevil says he’s going to take the thing that Karen had hidden to the police and she says not to take it to them.

So what do you think Towelites?! Are you excited for Marvel’s Daredevil?! I know I am and I can’t wait to see more from this very dark, gritty, and realistic series!
