What do Matt Smith and Arnold Schwarzenegger have in common? Well had you asked yesterday, the answer would have been nothing, but today Skydance Productions announced that the former Time Lord will be joining the cast of the upcoming Terminator reboot.
Paramount said: “Smith will play a new character with a strong connection to John Connor, alongside Arnold Schwarzenegger, Jason Clarke, Emilia Clarke, Jai Courtney, J.K. Simmons, Dayo Okeniyi and Byung Hun Lee.”
The upcoming film will be directed by Alan Taylor (Thor:The Dark World) from a script written by Laeta Kalogridis (Shutter Island, Terminator: Genesis) and Patrick Lussier (Terminator: Genesis). There’s no official work on the storyline for the reboot but a few hints have been given away.
Film critic Drew McWeeney alluded to the film having a Back to the Future feel to it, ““There’s a scene in the script where literally, we see the scene in the first Terminator where Arnold steps out, the punks threaten him, he rips Bill Paxton’s heart out and takes his clothes and wanders off. And as soon as that scene ends, another Arnold Schwarzenegger who’s older, and bearded and a very different version of the Terminator, comes walking in from the other side and plays another scene, right at the scene of that first incident.
Aside from unconfirmed rumors, we’re left in the dark. But with the Time Lord and the Terminator both officially confirmed, there’s a great chance this movie will be a fantastic addition to the Terminator franchise.
Paramount plans on releasing the film on July 1st, 2015.
