Today we get an amazing piece of news from The Hobbit! We can finally CONFIRM that the final Hobbit movie will be released on July 18th, 2014.  It seems that Warner Bros. wanted to shorten the gap between movies 2 and 3, which is just perfect to me!

A statement from Dan Fellman, Warner Bros Pictures President of Domestic Distribution said:

“We wanted to have a shorter gap between the second and third films of The Hobbit Trilogy. Opening in July affords us not only the perfect summer tentpole, but fans will have less time to wait for the finale of this epic adventure.”

Along with the confirmation dates for all three films, we also get some title changes.  The second film will now be called ‘The Desolation of Smaug’, which you can read more about on The Hobbit wiki page here.

What’s that mean to us towelites? It means that:

  • The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey will open on December 14th, 2012.
  • The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug will open December 13th, 2013.
  • The Hobbit: There and Back Again will open July 18th, 2014.

More Hobbit, in less amount of time! I don’t think any of us will argue with that! We will keep you posted as more Hobbit news comes in here at DFAT.
