The Academy Awards are entering their 90th year and 2018 is already shaping up to be one of the biggest years that The Oscars has ever seen. Jimmy Kimmel is back to host for the 2nd time and we’ll be saying all of the action play out on March 4th. Guillermo Del Toro’s, The Shape of Water, leads the pack with 13 nominations; including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Actress for Sally Dawkins’ breakout performance. People are making a prediction it will win but it’ll be facing some tough competition in the form of Martin McDonagh’s Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri which had nine nods and and Dunkirk with eight.

Looking at the list below, it’s a little surprising some of the titles that made it. After Get Out was snubbed at the Golden Globes, I never expected a sci-fi/horror film to be nominated for Best Picture. Either The Academy is getting a little smarter with how they nominate or they bent to the will of the cultural shift that’s happening in Hollywood. Either way, I was excited to see the Jordan Peele-directed film get the nod. We also saw a nomination for Greta Gerwig on her film, Lady Bird, which is the 5th time in 90s years that a female director was nominated for that category.

It was also pretty awesome to see Baby Driver get nominated for Best Editing and Best Sound Editing. If you haven’t seen the film, I implore you to get on it immediately. Edgar Wright created an instant classic and I haven’t seen that good of an editing job in…well, probably ever. It was also great to see Richard Deakins get nominated for his Cinematography work in Blade Runner 2049; because, let’s face it, that movie was absolutely stunning.
