He’s the best at what he does, and that certainly is the case with what Hugh Jackman does with The Wolverine. Teaming up with director James Mangold, the two of them did a terrific job at reintroducing the character to audiences, as told through an adaptation of Frank Miller and Chris Claremont’s samurai origin story. Through the help of the Diamond Select Minimates, we’re going to take a look at the release of The Wolverine on DVD and 3D Blu-ray.

The thing that made The Wolverine such a fantastic film, was that it truly let Hugh Jackman become the character. We’ve seen glimpses of his story in X2 and even more horribly done in X-Men: Origins; but I felt even though those films told more of his story, we didn’t learn why Wolverine was the man he was. This was the first time we truly got more depth from the character outside of him just baring his claws and having flashbacks.

The 3D Blu-ray release has something I’ve been anticipating since the film came out. Fox decided to create an UNLEASHED Edition of the film, that has a little bit more violence and a lot more swearing. Other than that, it’s basically the same film, which was pretty violent in it’s own rights.

Video Quality:

The Wolverine slashes its way onto 3D Blu-ray with an AVC encoded 1080p transfer in 2.40:1 from 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment. Every time blood flies, a ninja throws something, or Wolverine’s veins pop out of his chiseled neck; you can see it in brilliant High Definition.

Audio:

The Wolverine‘s loss-less DTS-HD Master Audio 7.1 mix is one of the best examples of total sound immersion. Each time you hear the signature ‘SNIKT’ of Wolverine’s claws, you know that he means business. The Marco Beltrami score fits the Japanese setting, as well as crescendo’s into a classic superhero “theme” when the action get’s going.

We have three different versions of the film, and though I don’t think that the 3D was needed to enhance the movie at all, that version of the film has the best extras and audio commentaries. Take a look at the special features list below and see which one fits your geek needs.

The different versions break down as follows:
