TV Onslaught

What’s the story Towelites? Mid-season break got you down? Well here’s some news from the Boob Toob Universe to pick you up again!

Defiance

Later this spring the SYFY Channel will start airing its new TV show concept that will cros-over into a video game. Defiance will premiere on April 15th and will feature 12 episodes for the first season. But how will the game and show tie into each other? During a Television Critics Association panel Tuesday, the crew and cast of the show explained the parallel of the formats. The TV show and the game will collaborate on creating parallel realities, players of the game will have no influence over major plot points in either one. Exectutive producer Kevin Murphy tried to make things clearer:

“The analogy I like to use is, I grew up as a gigantic comic book geek, and what I loved about comics is that you could love Batman and read Batman’s adventures, and if you happen to also like Superman, if you read both titles, sometimes there would be crossovers in the summer that lent an extra level of coolness to the whole thing. The game has its own narrative and story lines. They are shared universes with dual portals. If there is a catastrophic weather experience [in the TV show], the characters in the game [may] put that in motion. If you are supposed to get the gadget, you will get the gadget.”

I think this show sounds really interesting and the element of adding the video game universe into the mix is a fresh concept. Also the show was originally the creation of Rockne O’Bannon (Farscape) , who is still an executive producer, so I will at least give it a try.

Tomorrow

ABC has agreed to a script-to-series deal for “Tomorrow,” about a time-traveling FBI agent in a project created by Katherine Lindberg and Ted Cyr with “ever-so-popular” Brett Ratner helping to develop the show. If “Tomorrow” does become a series, it won’t be because ABC spent any money on a pilot. Instead, its deal with Georgeville Television is that ABC has to make a 13-episode commitment based solely on Lindberg’s and Cyr’s script. Once that decision is made, ABC will be committed to creating at least a half-season of the show. Joining Ratner on the series is Barry Schindel, a writer and producer behind shows like “Law & Order,” “Numbers” and the broken pilot starring former “Doctor Who” actor David Tennant, “Rex is Not Your Lawyer,” which NBC passed on in 2010. Sounds like a mess to me.

Wayward Pines and Blood Brothers

M. Night Shyamalan is apparently involved with two seperate shows over at Fox and FX. First up is Wayward Pines, based on the best-selling novel Pines by Blake Crouch, this Twin Peaks–esque series follows a Secret Service agent as he searches for two missing agents in a creepy, small town. Blood Brothers is about the West Point class of 1861 as the Civil War was just beginning. Two totally different ideas both shows will most likely be mega-mini-series spanning around 10-12 episodes each.

Another villain is on his way to Starling City, as we’ve reported to you before Seth Gamble (Fringe) will be portraying Count Vertigo. Executive producer Andrew Kreisberg explains that the character of Ra’s Al Ghul from Batman Begins is the inspiration for this version of Vertigo.

“The comic-book version of him, the Count Werner von Vertigo… when your last name is Vertigo of course you’re going to grow up to be a super villain who uses vertigo as a weapon. That concept just doesn’t exist in our world, and we’ve never been shy about saying that we’ve taken all of our cues from Chris Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy, and how he took somebody like Ra’s al Ghul, played by Liam Neeson, who was immortal in the comics and presented a realistic take on how he could be immortal, by having a front man who could be killed and allowing him to survive.”

Wonder Woman

Amazon is most likely happening. But do you think it will be a success? David E Kelly, creator of the failed Wonder Woman television show for NBC had this to say about the upcoming CW show Amazon:

“We made mistakes with ours. My only regret is we were never given a chance to correct them. We had a lot that was right about it and a great cast. In time, we could have fixed what we had done wrong, we just didn’t get that chance. I still believe it’s viable for a television series. I think it’s ripe to do it… I’m sad we didn’t get to do it but I do believe it can work for the CW. They’re smart to try it.”
