Disney has been rolling out live-action films over the past decade to mixed results and the premiere of Dumbo over the weekend puts it’s adaptation towards the bottom of those other movies. The Tim Burton-directed movie was able to take #1 by earning $45 million. This set it far below entries like The Jungle Book($103 million), Alice In Wonderland ($116 million), and Beauty and the Beast($174 million). We’ll have to see if it has the chops to continue to soar over the next few weeks.
Though it didn’t earn a lot out of the gate, it was above previous winners Us and Captain Marvel, which took in $33 and $20 million respectively. You can see the rest of the Top Ten below.
1. Dumbo $45,000,000
2. Us $33,605,000
3. Captain Marvel $20,500,000
4. Five Feet Apart $6,250,000
5. Unplanned $6,110,000
6. Wonder Park $4,940,000
7. How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World $4,232,000
8. Hotel Mumbai $3,163,660
9. Tyler Perry’s A Madea Family Funeral $2,700,000
10. The Beach Bum $1,800,000
Next weekend, horror will once again rule, as we see the debut of Pet Semetary. The Stephen King adaptation premiered at SXSW a few weeks ago to rave reviews and my money’s on that one taking the #1 spot. Find out if I’m right on the next edition of Weekend Roundup.
