It was a bit of a shocker this week as Crazy Rich Asians took the top spot at the Box Office by earning $25.2 million. Not shocking because the film isn’t good, its gotten amazing reviews; its just that Rom-Coms haven’t done this well since 2015’s Trainwreck. CRA had a budget of $30 million and it’s pretty much guaranteed to make it’s budget back in the very near future. An all-Asian cast, great reviews, and #1 at the Box Office; pretty fantastic for the indie gem!
The other new films were the newest Mark Wahlberg film, Mile 22, which took in only $13 million and Alpha which landed in the 4th position with $10 million. Expect both of them to fall off the Top Ten very soon.
1. Crazy Rich Asians $25,235,000
2. The Meg $21,150,000
3. Mile 22 $13,620,000
4. Alpha $10,500,000
5. Mission: Impossible – Fallout $10,500,000
6. Disney’s Christopher Robin $8,862,000
7. BlacKkKlansman $7,000,000
8. Slender Man $4,965,000
9. Hotel Transylvania 3 $3,675,000
10. Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again $3,385,000
Next weekend, we have the release of The Happytime Murders. Harkening back to Peter Jackson‘s Meet the Feebles, the film is a more jacked up version of that film and Avenue Q. It looks fantastic and I doubt we’ll see it in the Top Ten. Find out if I’m right on the next edition of Weekend Roundup!
